Design, develop, and maintain the robust on-device runtime platform that enables end-to-end Siri experiences.
-
Implement code that is well-designed, scalable, maintainable, highly testable, easy to debug, and highly performant, ensuring best practices in engineering.
-
Contribute to and help shape key architecture decisions that enable the product to scale, and proactively find areas of code to further optimize for performance.
-
Debug, profile, and optimize system performance to ensure high-quality, responsive interactions.
-
Develop software that interfaces with LLMs and on-device intelligence to enhance Siri's capabilities, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ship new experiences.
-
Leverage GenAI-based tooling and AI assistants to enhance engineering productivity, code quality, and efficiency at scale.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience, with 5+ years developing and shipping production software.
-
Strong proficiency in C++, Swift, or Objective-C, with a solid understanding of object-oriented programming and software design principles.
-
Strong understanding of OS internals, concurrency, multithreading, and memory management.
-
Strong familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI assistants, with experience using GenAI-based tools to accelerate engineering tasks (e.g., code generation, testing, or system analysis).
-
Experience with system performance analysis and optimization techniques.
-
Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced development team.
-
Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, and learn new technologies quickly.
-
Excellent communication skills, with experience collaborating across different technical teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Proficiency with Swift and Xcode, with experience building applications for Apple platforms.
-
Experience designing and developing systems that are efficient in resource-constrained environments.
-
Exposure to on-device development workflows (e.g., debugging tools, memory profiling, performance optimization).
-
Experience working on AI software runtimes with strong modeling intuition, or on voice assistants / conversational AI systems leveraging LLMs.
-
Experience with API design or framework development, including key software components and APIs used cross-functionally across different applications and platforms.
-
Experience leading the design of complex features or driving architectural decisions across teams (for candidates at the more senior end of the range).

Align your portfolio to Apple's ML stack
Apple ships on-device AI across iOS, macOS, and silicon. Frame your experience around optimizing models for edge deployment, Core ML, or low-latency inference rather than cloud-only architectures. Interviewers will probe production constraints, not just research benchmarks.
Target Apple's internal AI platform teams
Roles on Siri, Apple Intelligence, and the Neural Engine team consistently hire internationally. Filtering by these org names in your applications increases your odds of landing with a team that has active immigration infrastructure and experienced immigration counsel on file.
Extend your OPT runway before the offer stage
If you're on F-1 OPT working in AI or machine learning, STEM OPT gives you up to 24 additional months. Confirming your employer is E-Verify registered before you accept an offer ensures that extension isn't delayed by a compliance gap on Apple's end.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation early
USCIS scrutinizes H-1B petitions for AI roles when job descriptions are broad. Ask Apple's immigration team for a role-specific support letter and gather degree transcripts that directly map your field of study to machine learning, computer science, or a related specialty.
Understand Apple's PERM timing for green card planning
Apple typically initiates PERM labor certification after you've settled into the role. For EB-2 and EB-3 categories, DOL processing alone can run over a year, so raising green card eligibility during offer negotiations helps you plan your long-term status without gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Senior AI Software Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Senior AI Software Engineers. Apple participates in the annual H-1B cap lottery for new applicants and also files cap-exempt petitions where applicable. Because AI engineering roles require a specific technical degree background, they generally satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements, which strengthens petition approval odds.
How do I apply for Senior AI Software Engineer jobs at Apple?
Search Apple's careers site using titles like Senior Machine Learning Engineer or Senior AI Engineer alongside the team name you're targeting, such as Siri or Apple Intelligence. Tailor your resume to reflect on-device or edge AI experience. You can also browse confirmed sponsorship-eligible openings at Apple through Migrate Mate to identify roles that match your visa category before applying.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Senior AI Software Engineers?
Apple sponsors H-1B and H-1B1 visas for most international hires, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For students completing degrees in AI or machine learning, Apple also supports F-1 OPT and STEM OPT. Longer-term, Apple initiates EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for engineers who remain in the role.
What qualifications does Apple expect for a Senior AI Software Engineer?
Apple typically requires a master's or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a closely related field for senior-level AI roles, though strong engineers with a bachelor's degree and substantial production AI experience are considered. Hands-on experience with model training pipelines, inference optimization, and deployment at scale is weighted heavily, particularly work relevant to on-device or privacy-preserving AI.
How do I plan my timeline when Apple is sponsoring my H-1B?
H-1B cap-subject filings open in March for an October 1 start date. If you clear the lottery, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, though Apple commonly uses premium processing to accelerate adjudication to around 15 business days. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, your OPT authorization covers the gap between filing and your H-1B start date, provided you filed before OPT expired.
