Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you'll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We're looking for a Senior Product Security Engineer who is passionate about partnering with engineers to assess and mitigate the security risk of our virtualization stack.
You'll own the security risk posture for our virtualization stack. You'll get there by building the frameworks the org uses to reason about hypervisor risk — systematic threat models that surface risks, shared rubrics for assessing their impact and likelihood, and clear ways of communicating them to security, kernel, virtualization, and provisioning teams. From there, you'll own the response: designing and proposing defense-in-depth mitigations and driving their implementation.
As a member of the Product Security team, you will report to the Manager of Secure Design. Our Secure Design team enables DigitalOcean to build secure-by-design products. We leverage strong relationships with both product teams and the rest of security engineering to be successful. The team's scope is primarily focused on reviewing early-stage decisions, developing threat models, scaling impact via automation, curating security patterns, authoring security guidance, training, and championing security initiatives.
What you'll do:
-
Propose and implement mitigations and defense-in-depth to threats discovered through threat modeling the virtualization stack (90%)
-
Provide deep technical expertise in systems architecture, kernel security features and network architecture to build out a threat model for our virtualization stack
- Identify the trade-offs of different solutions and recommend the efficient design to achieve both functional goals and security requirements. We do not deliver mandates; we work alongside cross-functional partners to find mutually beneficial solutions.
-
Collaborate with development teams to implement remediations and defense in depth to protect DigitalOcean's customers' workloads.
-
Cultivate and promote a security culture (10%)
-
Mentor software engineering teams in security best practices.
- Help oversee our vulnerability management program (we call it security debt).
- Help DigitalOcean engineers understand how security events impact them. Do they need to worry about the next Redfish or Copy Fail CVEs? How does RetBleed impact DigitalOcean's fleet?
What you'll add to DigitalOcean:
Required qualifications:
- Deep familiarity with at least one kernel security feature (ex: AppArmor, SELinux, Landlock, etc.)
- Capable of assessing and understanding the performance implications of code changes to virtualization stacks (especially in Qemu and KVM), built from hands-on experience.
- A record of partnering with internal engineering teams to tackle security problems across an entire stack with empathy and creativity. Engineering teams are our partners, not our adversaries.
- Ability to clearly communicate security topics and vulnerability classes (e.g. memory corruption, privilege escalation, TOCTOU, etc) and ability to provide actionable direction to product teams.
- Working knowledge of modern development concepts (virtualized environments, containerization, continuous integration + delivery).
Preferred qualifications:
- 5+ years of writing systems level code (embedded systems, kernel, assembly or similar).
- Experience guiding software teams on secure architecture design.
- Written code for an embedded system (raspberry pi, arduino, etc).
- Experience building or reviewing threat models and ability to craft malicious user, attacker, and abuse/misuse cases.
- An understanding of patches and mitigations for hardware side-channel attacks.
- Familiarity with object oriented and functional programming concepts, particularly with languages such as Go, Rust, or C.
Compensation Range:
- $140,000 - $175,000

Frame your portfolio around developer products
DigitalOcean builds cloud infrastructure for developers and small teams. Highlight product work where you owned developer-facing features, API roadmaps, or platform tooling. Hiring managers will connect your experience to their product surface faster.
Verify your OPT timeline before applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your remaining authorization window before your first interview. DigitalOcean will need time to file an H-1B petition, and cap-subject filings follow USCIS's April lottery calendar, not your offer date.
Ask about sponsorship scope in the offer stage
Before signing, confirm whether DigitalOcean covers H-1B filing fees, premium processing, and future Green Card sponsorship through PERM. Some product roles include this; others don't. Get clarity before the negotiation window closes.
Target teams with active infrastructure roadmaps
DigitalOcean's managed databases, Kubernetes, and App Platform teams consistently hire product managers. Roles tied to core platform expansion are more likely to have headcount approved for sponsored hires than newer or experimental product areas.
Build a credentials package specific to cloud PM roles
Prepare a clear credentials package: degree transcripts, a specialty occupation support letter if your degree field isn't an exact match, and a product portfolio documenting measurable outcomes. USCIS scrutinizes H-1B specialty occupation evidence closely for PM petitions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter DigitalOcean openings by visa type
Not every DigitalOcean product role is open to sponsored candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter open Product Manager positions by the visa types you're eligible for, so you apply only where sponsorship is confirmed and realistic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Product Managers?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Product Manager roles. The company has an established pattern of sponsoring international talent in its product function. Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start, so your offer timeline needs to align with the USCIS lottery calendar if you're not already in H-1B status.
How do I apply for Product Manager jobs at DigitalOcean?
Applications go through DigitalOcean's careers portal. Most product roles require a resume, and later-stage interviews typically include a product case study or take-home exercise focused on prioritization and roadmap thinking. You can browse open Product Manager positions filtered by visa eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly through DigitalOcean's site.
Which visa types does DigitalOcean commonly use for Product Manager roles?
DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work authorization path for Product Managers. The company also works with F-1 OPT and CPT for candidates already in the U.S. on student visas, and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is available for longer-tenured employees, typically initiated after the H-1B is established.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for Product Manager roles?
Most Product Manager openings at DigitalOcean expect a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, or business, combined with demonstrated experience owning a product roadmap. For H-1B purposes, your degree must support a specialty occupation finding, so the closer your academic background is to the technical domain of the role, the stronger your petition.
How do I think about the timeline from application to visa approval for a DigitalOcean PM role?
If you need a new H-1B, plan for a multi-month process: offer, LCA filing with DOL, H-1B petition submission in April, lottery selection, and USCIS adjudication before an October 1 start. If you're transferring an existing H-1B, DigitalOcean can file a cap-exempt transfer and you can start once the receipt notice is issued, with no October waiting period.
