Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you'll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We're looking for a Senior Product Security Engineer who is passionate about partnering with engineers to assess and mitigate the security risk of our virtualization stack.
You'll own the security risk posture for our virtualization stack. You'll get there by building the frameworks the org uses to reason about hypervisor risk — systematic threat models that surface risks, shared rubrics for assessing their impact and likelihood, and clear ways of communicating them to security, kernel, virtualization, and provisioning teams. From there, you'll own the response: designing and proposing defense-in-depth mitigations and driving their implementation.
As a member of the Product Security team, you will report to the Manager of Secure Design. Our Secure Design team enables DigitalOcean to build secure-by-design products. We leverage strong relationships with both product teams and the rest of security engineering to be successful. The team's scope is primarily focused on reviewing early-stage decisions, developing threat models, scaling impact via automation, curating security patterns, authoring security guidance, training, and championing security initiatives.
What you'll do:
-
Propose and implement mitigations and defense-in-depth to threats discovered through threat modeling the virtualization stack (90%)
-
Provide deep technical expertise in systems architecture, kernel security features and network architecture to build out a threat model for our virtualization stack
- Identify the trade-offs of different solutions and recommend the efficient design to achieve both functional goals and security requirements. We do not deliver mandates; we work alongside cross-functional partners to find mutually beneficial solutions.
-
Collaborate with development teams to implement remediations and defense in depth to protect DigitalOcean's customers' workloads.
-
Cultivate and promote a security culture (10%)
-
Mentor software engineering teams in security best practices.
- Help oversee our vulnerability management program (we call it security debt).
- Help DigitalOcean engineers understand how security events impact them. Do they need to worry about the next Redfish or Copy Fail CVEs? How does RetBleed impact DigitalOcean's fleet?
What you'll add to DigitalOcean:
Required qualifications:
- Deep familiarity with at least one kernel security feature (ex: AppArmor, SELinux, Landlock, etc.)
- Capable of assessing and understanding the performance implications of code changes to virtualization stacks (especially in Qemu and KVM), built from hands-on experience.
- A record of partnering with internal engineering teams to tackle security problems across an entire stack with empathy and creativity. Engineering teams are our partners, not our adversaries.
- Ability to clearly communicate security topics and vulnerability classes (e.g. memory corruption, privilege escalation, TOCTOU, etc) and ability to provide actionable direction to product teams.
- Working knowledge of modern development concepts (virtualized environments, containerization, continuous integration + delivery).
Preferred qualifications:
- 5+ years of writing systems level code (embedded systems, kernel, assembly or similar).
- Experience guiding software teams on secure architecture design.
- Written code for an embedded system (raspberry pi, arduino, etc).
- Experience building or reviewing threat models and ability to craft malicious user, attacker, and abuse/misuse cases.
- An understanding of patches and mitigations for hardware side-channel attacks.
- Familiarity with object oriented and functional programming concepts, particularly with languages such as Go, Rust, or C.
Compensation Range:
- $140,000 - $175,000

Align your portfolio with developer tooling
DigitalOcean's Product Software Engineers build customer-facing cloud products like Droplets, Managed Databases, and App Platform. Showcase projects where you've shipped developer-facing features or worked across product and infrastructure layers, not just backend services in isolation.
Clarify your visa type before applying
DigitalOcean sponsors multiple visa categories including H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT. Knowing which status you currently hold and when your work authorization expires helps you have an informed conversation with recruiters rather than leaving sponsorship scope ambiguous until late in the process.
Time your F-1 OPT application around offer timelines
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS recommends filing your EAD application at least 90 days before your program end date. Coordinate your DigitalOcean offer acceptance with your OPT start date to avoid any gap in authorized employment before your first day.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship
Searching for Product Software Engineer openings at DigitalOcean by hand means sifting through listings that may not sponsor. Use Migrate Mate to browse DigitalOcean roles already filtered for visa sponsorship, so your effort goes toward applications that can actually move forward.
Prepare for PERM documentation requirements early
DigitalOcean sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, which require a PERM labor certification filed with DOL. Gather your educational credentials, transcripts, and employment history well before your employer initiates the process, since incomplete records are the most common source of delays.
Address specialty occupation fit in your application materials
H-1B eligibility for Product Software Engineer roles requires demonstrating that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Frame your resume and cover letter around the theoretical and practical application of computer science or a related field, not just years of experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Product Software Engineer roles. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are subject to an annual lottery, timing your job search to align with the April filing window matters. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, a cap-exempt transfer to DigitalOcean is possible year-round.
How do I apply for Product Software Engineer jobs at DigitalOcean?
You can find open Product Software Engineer positions on DigitalOcean's careers page or browse sponsorship-filtered listings on Migrate Mate. Applications typically involve submitting a resume and completing a recruiter screen, followed by technical interviews covering system design and product thinking. Raise your visa sponsorship needs early in the recruiter conversation to confirm alignment before investing in the full interview process.
Which visa types does DigitalOcean commonly use for Product Software Engineer roles?
DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for engineering roles, along with EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term employment. TN visa status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations. F-1 CPT is typically used for internship placements, while OPT covers post-graduation full-time employment for up to three years with a STEM extension.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for Product Software Engineer roles?
DigitalOcean's Product Software Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Beyond technical fundamentals, the company looks for engineers with experience building and iterating on customer-facing products, familiarity with cloud infrastructure, and the ability to work across product and engineering functions. Practical experience shipping features at scale strengthens both your candidacy and your H-1B specialty occupation case.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take if I receive a Product Software Engineer offer from DigitalOcean?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B transfers for candidates already in status can be processed in as little as 15 business days with USCIS premium processing. New H-1B cap petitions must wait for the October 1 start date following the April lottery. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically takes one to three years or longer depending on your country of birth and DOL processing backlogs.
