Frame your infrastructure scope in numbers
DigitalOcean evaluates Principal DevOps candidates on the scale they've owned. Quantify the environments you've managed, teams you've led, and incidents you've resolved. Senior IC roles here require evidence of org-wide impact, not just technical depth.
Target roles requiring cloud platform ownership
DigitalOcean builds developer-facing cloud products, so Principal DevOps postings often blend SRE, platform engineering, and internal tooling. Filter your search to roles that mention Kubernetes, Terraform, or internal developer platforms to find the highest-fit openings.
Get your LCA documentation lined up early
Once you receive an offer, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before the H-1B petition can move. Have your degree credentials, employment verification letters, and any prior visa approvals organized so the process doesn't stall on your end.
Understand OPT cap-gap if you're transitioning from F-1
If your F-1 OPT expires before October 1 and your H-1B is pending, the cap-gap provision extends your work authorization. Confirm your I-20 and OPT EAD are current before your start date so there's no work authorization gap during onboarding.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open roles efficiently
Principal DevOps Engineer openings at sponsoring employers can be hard to identify through general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified visa-sponsoring roles at DigitalOcean and similar cloud infrastructure companies, filtered by visa type and seniority.
Negotiate the offer before H-1B filing begins
Once your employer files the H-1B petition with USCIS, the position title, salary, and work location are locked into the LCA. Negotiate your compensation, remote work arrangements, and title before that point because amendments after filing add cost and delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Principal Devops Engineers?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Principal DevOps Engineers and other senior technical roles. The company has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for engineering positions. Because Principal DevOps roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria, they're well-suited for H-1B sponsorship when the candidate holds a relevant bachelor's degree or higher.
How do I apply for Principal Devops Engineer jobs at DigitalOcean?
Apply directly through DigitalOcean's careers page, where Principal DevOps Engineer openings are listed with full descriptions and requirements. You can also find sponsorship-verified listings through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where the employer has an active visa sponsorship history. Tailor your resume to highlight platform ownership, Kubernetes expertise, and large-scale infrastructure experience.
Which visa types are commonly used for Principal Devops Engineer roles at DigitalOcean?
H-1B is the most common visa for Principal DevOps Engineers at U.S. technology companies including DigitalOcean. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for candidates still within their post-graduation authorization window. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. For long-term paths, EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship are also part of the picture for senior hires.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for a Principal Devops Engineer?
Principal DevOps Engineer roles at DigitalOcean typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related field, along with substantial experience in cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and container orchestration. At the principal level, you're expected to set technical direction across teams, not just execute. Familiarity with DigitalOcean's own product stack or comparable public cloud environments is a strong signal.
How do I plan my timeline if I'm waiting on H-1B sponsorship at DigitalOcean?
H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date, so the timing of your offer matters. If you receive an offer in late winter or spring, the process can move quickly. If you're mid-cycle, premium processing through USCIS can reduce approval time to around 15 business days. Build in buffer time for the DOL's LCA certification step, which precedes the USCIS petition.
