Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you'll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We're looking for a Senior Product Security Engineer who is passionate about partnering with engineers to assess and mitigate the security risk of our virtualization stack.
You'll own the security risk posture for our virtualization stack. You'll get there by building the frameworks the org uses to reason about hypervisor risk — systematic threat models that surface risks, shared rubrics for assessing their impact and likelihood, and clear ways of communicating them to security, kernel, virtualization, and provisioning teams. From there, you'll own the response: designing and proposing defense-in-depth mitigations and driving their implementation.
As a member of the Product Security team, you will report to the Manager of Secure Design. Our Secure Design team enables DigitalOcean to build secure-by-design products. We leverage strong relationships with both product teams and the rest of security engineering to be successful. The team's scope is primarily focused on reviewing early-stage decisions, developing threat models, scaling impact via automation, curating security patterns, authoring security guidance, training, and championing security initiatives.
What you'll do:
-
Propose and implement mitigations and defense-in-depth to threats discovered through threat modeling the virtualization stack (90%)
-
Provide deep technical expertise in systems architecture, kernel security features and network architecture to build out a threat model for our virtualization stack
- Identify the trade-offs of different solutions and recommend the efficient design to achieve both functional goals and security requirements. We do not deliver mandates; we work alongside cross-functional partners to find mutually beneficial solutions.
-
Collaborate with development teams to implement remediations and defense in depth to protect DigitalOcean's customers' workloads.
-
Cultivate and promote a security culture (10%)
-
Mentor software engineering teams in security best practices.
- Help oversee our vulnerability management program (we call it security debt).
- Help DigitalOcean engineers understand how security events impact them. Do they need to worry about the next Redfish or Copy Fail CVEs? How does RetBleed impact DigitalOcean's fleet?
What you'll add to DigitalOcean:
Required qualifications:
- Deep familiarity with at least one kernel security feature (ex: AppArmor, SELinux, Landlock, etc.)
- Capable of assessing and understanding the performance implications of code changes to virtualization stacks (especially in Qemu and KVM), built from hands-on experience.
- A record of partnering with internal engineering teams to tackle security problems across an entire stack with empathy and creativity. Engineering teams are our partners, not our adversaries.
- Ability to clearly communicate security topics and vulnerability classes (e.g. memory corruption, privilege escalation, TOCTOU, etc) and ability to provide actionable direction to product teams.
- Working knowledge of modern development concepts (virtualized environments, containerization, continuous integration + delivery).
Preferred qualifications:
- 5+ years of writing systems level code (embedded systems, kernel, assembly or similar).
- Experience guiding software teams on secure architecture design.
- Written code for an embedded system (raspberry pi, arduino, etc).
- Experience building or reviewing threat models and ability to craft malicious user, attacker, and abuse/misuse cases.
- An understanding of patches and mitigations for hardware side-channel attacks.
- Familiarity with object oriented and functional programming concepts, particularly with languages such as Go, Rust, or C.
Compensation Range:
- $140,000 - $175,000

Frame Your Cloud Product Experience Precisely
DigitalOcean hires Product Owners who can speak to developer experience and infrastructure products, not just general SaaS. Tailor your resume to show ownership of API-facing or platform-level products rather than broad consumer feature work.
Verify Your Role Qualifies as a Specialty Occupation
H-1B eligibility requires that your Product Owner role normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. Confirm the job description references a qualifying degree requirement before applying, since generalist product roles can draw USCIS scrutiny.
Target DigitalOcean Roles with Engineering Adjacency
DigitalOcean Product Owner openings tied to platform, developer tools, or cloud infrastructure carry stronger H-1B defensibility than marketing-adjacent product roles. Prioritize postings that list computer science, engineering, or a related technical degree as a requirement.
Align Your Timeline to the H-1B Cap Cycle
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration against that timeline and discuss cap-gap protection with your employer before the registration window closes.
Ask About Internal Mobility Before Filing
DigitalOcean's product org spans multiple verticals. If your initial offer is in a role without a strong specialty occupation argument, internal transfer to a more technically defined Product Owner position can strengthen the H-1B petition before USCIS filing.
Use Migrate Mate to Identify Active Openings
DigitalOcean posts Product Owner roles across multiple tracks, and availability shifts frequently. Use Migrate Mate to filter and track current openings at DigitalOcean that are open to visa sponsorship, so you apply during active hiring cycles rather than to stale listings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Product Owners?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Product Owner roles, though eligibility depends on how the specific position is defined. Roles tied to cloud infrastructure, developer tools, or platform products tend to have a clearer specialty occupation argument under USCIS standards. Roles with a more general or business-strategy focus can attract additional USCIS scrutiny, so the job description matters.
How do I apply for Product Owner jobs at DigitalOcean?
Applications go through DigitalOcean's careers page, where you can filter by role and department. Migrate Mate is a practical way to monitor active Product Owner openings at DigitalOcean that are open to visa sponsorship, so you can apply during live hiring windows. DigitalOcean's interview process for product roles typically includes a product case, a technical systems discussion, and cross-functional stakeholder rounds.
Which visa types does DigitalOcean sponsor for Product Owner roles?
DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas as the primary long-term work authorization path for Product Owners. F-1 OPT and CPT are supported for candidates still within their authorized training period. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose qualifications align with a covered professional category. Longer-term, DigitalOcean has supported EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for employees in product roles.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for Product Owner roles?
DigitalOcean Product Owner roles typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related technical field, along with demonstrated experience managing a product roadmap in a cloud, infrastructure, or developer-tools environment. Familiarity with agile delivery, API product thinking, and cross-functional engineering collaboration is consistently signaled in job postings. Candidates without a directly relevant degree can sometimes substitute substantial hands-on experience, but a technical degree strengthens H-1B eligibility.
How do I navigate the visa sponsorship process once I have a Product Owner offer from DigitalOcean?
Once you have an offer, DigitalOcean's HR and legal teams will coordinate the petition. For H-1B, the employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting Form I-129 to USCIS. If you're subject to the annual cap, the registration window opens in March and selection is determined by lottery. Getting your offer finalized well before February gives you the most preparation time for a cap-subject filing.
