Target ABB's engineering and automation divisions
ABB's core business runs on electrical engineering, robotics, and industrial automation. Roles in these disciplines align directly with Manufacturing OPT and STEM OPT eligibility, so focus your applications on divisions where your degree field maps cleanly to the job requirements.
Confirm ABB's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Your 24-month STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing an offer, verify ABB's enrollment status through the E-Verify website so you're not caught short when your initial 12-month OPT period ends.
Frame your resume around quantifiable engineering outcomes
ABB's hiring managers in Manufacturing evaluate candidates on measurable contributions, not just credentials. Lead with project outcomes, efficiency improvements, or system builds from internships or coursework rather than listing software tools or generic responsibilities.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship policy during your offer negotiation
ABB's H-1B filing history signals it transitions OPT hires to long-term sponsorship, but individual business units handle decisions differently. Ask your recruiter directly whether your specific team has sponsored H-1B for OPT employees in previous years to gauge realistic expectations.
Use Migrate Mate to verify ABB's visa filing history
Before investing time in ABB's application process, use Migrate Mate to review the company's H-1B and employment-based green card filing patterns by role. That data tells you which job titles ABB has actually sponsored, so you can target the right positions from the start.
Research prevailing wage rates for your ABB role
When ABB later files an H-1B petition on your behalf, DOL prevailing wage requirements will set the salary floor. Look up your target occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your OPT offer so you understand the wage trajectory ahead of any transition.
ABB OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor OPT visas?
ABB doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization granted by USCIS directly to F-1 students, so you arrive with your EAD already in hand. What ABB does is hire students who hold valid OPT authorization, and its H-1B filing history indicates it has a track record of supporting the transition to long-term visa sponsorship for eligible employees.
Which departments at ABB typically hire OPT students?
ABB's strongest hiring for OPT candidates sits in electrical engineering, industrial automation, robotics, power systems, and software development for industrial applications. These areas align with STEM-designated degree fields, which matters for your 24-month STEM OPT extension eligibility. Corporate functions like finance and supply chain also hire, though STEM extension eligibility depends on your specific degree.
How do I confirm ABB qualifies for my STEM OPT extension?
Your DSO at your university will verify employer eligibility when you submit your STEM OPT extension request. The core requirement is that ABB is enrolled in E-Verify. You can check enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search tool before accepting an offer, and your DSO can confirm the specific Form I-983 training plan requirements ABB will need to complete with you.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at ABB?
Most OPT-to-H-1B transitions at large manufacturers like ABB follow the annual H-1B cap lottery cycle, which opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you're hired on OPT, you'd typically need to be in your role by the preceding fall or winter for your employer to include you in the next lottery registration window. Your initial 12-month OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension gives you enough runway to go through multiple lottery cycles if needed.
How do I find OPT-eligible jobs at ABB?
Search ABB's careers portal filtering by role type and location, then cross-reference open positions against your degree field to confirm STEM OPT eligibility. Migrate Mate lets you review ABB's historical visa filing data by job title, so you can see which roles the company has actually sponsored before committing time to the application process. Prioritize roles in engineering and automation where ABB's filing activity is most consistent.
How does ABB hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. ABB can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check ABB's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
