Align your degree to Alstom's engineering roles
Alstom's U.S. hiring centers on rail systems, propulsion, and signaling engineering. Before applying, cross-reference your degree field against the specific role's requirements using O*NET to confirm your coursework maps cleanly to the job code your DSO will use for OPT authorization.
Confirm Alstom's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Verify Alstom's enrollment status directly with your HR contact during the offer stage, not after signing, so your DSO can process the I-983 training plan without delays.
Target Alstom's early-career manufacturing programs
Alstom recruits heavily through university partnerships and rotational engineering programs. Apply during fall recruiting cycles when manufacturing and systems engineering headcount opens, since these programs are structured to accommodate the OPT authorization timeline rather than requiring immediate start dates.
Prepare your OPT EAD timeline around Alstom's start dates
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date. Coordinate your requested start date with Alstom's onboarding calendar, since your EAD must be active on day one and manufacturing roles rarely accommodate delayed starts.
Research Alstom's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to review Alstom's H-1B Labor Condition Application filings by job title and location. This shows which engineering roles the company has sponsored before, helping you target positions most likely to lead to H-1B sponsorship after your OPT period ends.
Negotiate your training plan scope during offer discussions
For STEM OPT, Alstom must sign an I-983 training plan outlining your learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Raise this during the offer stage, not after, so hiring managers and HR align on the plan before your first day in a manufacturing or systems role.
Alstom OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Alstom sponsor OPT visas?
Alstom hires F-1 students who already hold OPT work authorization. USCIS grants OPT directly to you as the student, so Alstom doesn't file a petition for OPT itself. What matters is that Alstom is willing to hire you while you're on OPT and, for STEM OPT, that the company is enrolled in E-Verify.
Which departments at Alstom typically hire OPT students?
Alstom's OPT hiring is concentrated in engineering functions, particularly mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineering roles tied to its rail and transit manufacturing operations. Project management, supply chain, and quality assurance roles also appear, especially at manufacturing sites where Alstom builds and maintains transit equipment.
How do I start the OPT process if I receive an offer from Alstom?
Contact your DSO as soon as you have a prospective start date. Your DSO updates your SEVIS record and issues a new I-20 recommending OPT, which you then submit to USCIS with Form I-765. USCIS recommends filing up to 90 days before your program end date to avoid gaps between graduation and your EAD activation.
How long does it take to get hired at Alstom on OPT?
Alstom's hiring process for engineering roles typically runs four to eight weeks from application to offer. Add USCIS processing time for your EAD if you haven't filed yet, since standard processing can take two to three months. Use Migrate Mate to identify which Alstom roles have the most active H-1B sponsorship history while you plan your timeline.
Does Alstom support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
Alstom has filed H-1B petitions for engineering and technical roles, making it a viable path for OPT students seeking long-term sponsorship. H-1B sponsorship is employer-initiated and role-specific, so your best approach is confirming sponsorship intent during the offer process rather than assuming it applies to all positions.
How does Alstom hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Alstom can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Alstom's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
