Align your degree to Carilion's operational roles
Carilion Clinic's business support functions draw heavily on degrees in healthcare administration, business, and information systems. Map your coursework to their posted job requirements before applying, because a tight degree-to-role match is what hiring managers in healthcare operations screen for first.
Confirm your OPT EAD before the interview
You authorize your own OPT through USCIS and your DSO, not through Carilion Clinic. Have your EAD in hand before your first interview so you can confirm your start date clearly. Employers in healthcare operations move quickly and can't wait on pending authorization paperwork.
Verify Carilion's E-Verify enrollment for STEM extension eligibility
If your degree qualifies for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Carilion Clinic's E-Verify status early in the offer process, because if enrollment lapses, your extension request through USCIS could be denied regardless of your qualifications.
Use Migrate Mate to identify which Carilion roles align with H-1B filings
Carilion Clinic's LCA filing history on Migrate Mate shows which job titles and departments have received H-1B sponsorship. Target those roles during your OPT job search, since they're the most likely pathways for an OPT-to-H-1B transition once your standard OPT authorization period ends.
Research prevailing wages before discussing salary
Before your offer conversation, look up the wage level for your target role using the OFLC Wage Search and cross-reference it with Bureau of Labor Statistics data for your metro area. Carilion Clinic's H-1B LCA filings must meet prevailing wage standards, so knowing that floor strengthens your negotiating position.
Submit OPT job documentation to your DSO within 10 days
Once Carilion Clinic extends an offer, report the employer name, address, and job duties to your DSO within 10 days of starting work, as USCIS requires. Delays in updating your SEVIS record can create compliance gaps that complicate a later H-1B sponsorship request with the same employer.
Carilion Clinic OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Carilion Clinic sponsor OPT visas?
Carilion Clinic doesn't sponsor OPT, because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to F-1 students. What Carilion Clinic does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. You secure your own OPT through your DSO and USCIS, then apply to Carilion Clinic as an authorized worker. The employer's role is simply to verify your EAD during onboarding.
Which departments at Carilion Clinic typically hire OPT students?
Carilion Clinic's business support and administrative functions, including healthcare operations, information systems, revenue cycle, and finance, are the most common entry points for OPT students. Roles in these areas frequently align with degrees in business, healthcare administration, and information technology, which map well to specialty occupation standards relevant for a later H-1B filing.
How do I know if a Carilion Clinic role supports STEM OPT extension?
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code appearing on the STEM Designated Degree Program list and Carilion Clinic being enrolled in E-Verify. Check the E-Verify employer database to confirm enrollment before accepting an offer. Your DSO reviews your Form I-983 training plan with the employer and files the extension request through USCIS on your behalf.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at Carilion Clinic?
Standard OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization. If you qualify for a 24-month STEM extension, you can remain employed while Carilion Clinic files an H-1B petition during the April cap-subject registration window. Most employees who successfully transition are in roles with consistent LCA filing history. Use Migrate Mate to see which Carilion job titles have active H-1B sponsorship records before you apply.
How do I approach Carilion Clinic about H-1B sponsorship after my OPT period?
Raise H-1B sponsorship during the offer stage, not after you've started. Ask your recruiter directly whether the role has been sponsored previously and whether the team is familiar with the H-1B petition process. Carilion Clinic's documented LCA filing history shows which roles have gone through the process before, which makes that conversation easier and more grounded.
How does Carilion Clinic hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Carilion Clinic can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Carilion Clinic's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
