Align your degree to CMC's technical roles
CMC's manufacturing operations rely heavily on metallurgical, mechanical, and industrial engineering graduates. Before applying, map your degree field to the specific plant or operational role you're targeting so your OPT eligibility is immediately clear to the recruiter reviewing your application.
Confirm CMC's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask CMC's HR team to confirm enrollment status before you sign an offer, since losing STEM OPT eligibility mid-employment disrupts your timeline to H-1B sponsorship significantly.
Research CMC's EB-2 and EB-3 filing history
CMC sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green cards, which signals a genuine long-term sponsorship infrastructure. Use Migrate Mate to review CMC's verified filing history by role and location so you can target the facilities and job titles most likely to lead to a full visa pathway.
Time your OPT application around CMC's hiring cycles
CMC's manufacturing facilities often ramp hiring in Q1 and Q3 ahead of production cycles. File your OPT EAD application with USCIS at least 90 days before your program end date so your authorization is active when those windows open.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
CMC must pay prevailing wages for any sponsored visa role. Before negotiating your offer, run the OFLC Wage Search for your occupation code and CMC's specific metro area. Coming in informed demonstrates seriousness and helps you evaluate whether the offer supports a future sponsorship case.
Target roles with a direct PERM occupation match
When CMC eventually files for green card sponsorship, the PERM labor certification requires a specific occupation definition. Use O*NET to identify which job titles in CMC's manufacturing divisions map cleanly to Standard Occupational Classification codes, then apply to roles that align with those definitions from the start.
CMC OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CMC sponsor OPT visas?
CMC hires F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD granted by USCIS. The company does not petition for OPT itself since that authorization comes directly from USCIS to the student. CMC's value as an OPT-friendly employer lies in its willingness to hire OPT workers and its track record of sponsoring EB-2 and EB-3 green cards for longer-term employees.
Which departments at CMC typically hire OPT students?
CMC's strongest OPT hiring tends to occur in engineering, operations, and supply chain functions tied to its steel manufacturing business. Roles in metallurgical engineering, industrial engineering, process improvement, and procurement are the most common entry points for F-1 students. Corporate functions like finance and IT also hire OPT workers at certain facilities.
How do I know if CMC's offer qualifies for the STEM OPT extension?
Your role must fall under a STEM-designated Classification of Instructional Programs code and CMC must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm E-Verify enrollment with HR before accepting the offer. Your Designated School Official then approves the extension through SEVIS, and USCIS issues the updated EAD. Starting this process at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires avoids any gap in authorization.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at CMC?
CMC's green card filing history in EB-2 and EB-3 categories suggests the company supports long-term sponsorship, but H-1B sponsorship is a separate decision made at the manager and HR level. Most employees working toward H-1B sponsorship at manufacturing companies spend one to two years demonstrating performance before the company initiates a petition. Discussing sponsorship intent early in the offer negotiation sets clearer expectations on both sides.
How do I find OPT-eligible job openings at CMC?
Migrate Mate lists CMC roles filtered for employers with verified visa sponsorship history, which helps you identify positions where long-term immigration support is most likely. You can also apply directly through CMC's careers page and filter by location and function. When reaching out to recruiters, lead with your OPT EAD status and your STEM extension eligibility if applicable to preempt sponsorship questions early.
How does CMC hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. CMC can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check CMC's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
