Target engineering rotational programs early
Cummins runs structured rotational programs in mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering that are built around new graduates. These programs often convert to full-time roles, which strengthens your case for STEM OPT extension and eventual H-1B sponsorship from within an established team.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your STEM OPT 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Cummins's active enrollment through E-Verify's employer search before you sign. A lapse in enrollment can disrupt your authorization even when everything else in your application is correct.
Align your resume to manufacturing SOC codes
Cummins recruits for roles tied to specific Standard Occupational Classification codes in mechanical engineering and operations. Cross-reference your degree and experience against O*NET profiles for those roles so your application language matches what hiring managers and HR systems are scanning for.
Search Migrate Mate for confirmed OPT-hiring employers
Before applying broadly, use Migrate Mate to filter for manufacturing employers with documented OPT hiring history. This narrows your list to companies that already understand the authorization timeline and reduces the risk of withdrawing an offer after you've turned down other opportunities.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your start date
For STEM OPT, your training plan on Form I-983 must be submitted to your DSO before you begin work, not after onboarding. Coordinate with Cummins HR early to get the employer section completed, since delays in that form can push back your USCIS authorization approval.
Negotiate your start date around OPT cap-gap timing
If Cummins selects you for H-1B and your OPT expires before October 1, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically. Discuss this timeline with HR during the offer stage so your start date and any role transitions are planned around USCIS's October 1 effective date.
Cummins OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cummins sponsor OPT visas?
Cummins doesn't sponsor OPT directly because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What Cummins does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. The company is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required if you need a STEM OPT extension after your initial 12 months.
Which departments at Cummins typically hire OPT students?
Cummins most consistently hires OPT students into mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software development, supply chain, and data analytics. Manufacturing operations and R&D teams also recruit new graduates. Roles in these functions tend to carry degree requirements in STEM fields, which aligns well with STEM OPT eligibility criteria.
How do I apply for OPT roles at Cummins?
Apply through Cummins's careers portal and flag your OPT status in the work authorization section. Have your EAD card details and OPT end date ready because recruiters will ask. Use Migrate Mate to identify which Cummins divisions have the strongest track record of hiring OPT students before you prioritize which job postings to pursue.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at Cummins?
Most OPT employees who pursue H-1B at Cummins spend at least one to two years in a role before the company files on their behalf. USCIS opens H-1B registration in March each year for an October 1 start date. STEM OPT gives you up to 24 additional months of authorization to stay employed while you wait for a successful H-1B selection.
How do I know if a Cummins role qualifies for STEM OPT extension?
Your degree must be in a STEM field listed on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list, and your role must provide practical training directly related to that degree. Check the O*NET profile for your job title to confirm the degree field alignment, then confirm the match with your DSO before accepting the offer.
How does Cummins hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Cummins can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Cummins's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
