About Baytown
With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.
Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.
Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.
The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

Align your degree to ExxonMobil's core disciplines
ExxonMobil's OPT hiring concentrates in petroleum, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering, plus data science and geosciences. Map your degree field directly to one of these disciplines before applying so your OPT EAD authorization clearly matches the posted role requirements.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. ExxonMobil participates in E-Verify, which makes the 24-month STEM extension viable for qualifying degree holders. Verify this directly with your recruiter before signing, not after your OPT EAD arrives.
Target early-career programs with a conversion track
ExxonMobil's rotational and early-career engineering programs are historically the clearest pathway to H-1B sponsorship after OPT. Prioritize applications to these structured programs over individual contributor postings if your goal is long-term U.S. work authorization.
Search ExxonMobil's verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review ExxonMobil's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by occupation code. This shows which roles the company has actively sponsored for H-1B, giving you a concrete signal about where OPT-to-H-1B conversion is most common.
File your STEM extension 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed before your current OPT EAD expires. Submit it at least 90 days out to preserve your work authorization during processing. Your DSO must recommend the extension in SEVIS before you can file with USCIS.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
ExxonMobil's H-1B LCA filings are subject to DOL prevailing wage requirements. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call so you know the wage floor for your role and can evaluate the offer against it.
ExxonMobil OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does ExxonMobil sponsor OPT visas?
ExxonMobil doesn't sponsor OPT directly because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What ExxonMobil does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. The company is enrolled in E-Verify, which makes it eligible to support STEM OPT extensions for qualifying degree holders.
Which departments at ExxonMobil typically hire OPT students?
Engineering disciplines including petroleum, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering account for the largest share of OPT hiring at ExxonMobil. Data science, geosciences, and operations roles also appear consistently. Early-career rotational programs in these functions are where most OPT students enter the company, often with a clear path toward H-1B sponsorship.
How do I navigate the OPT-to-H-1B transition at ExxonMobil?
ExxonMobil has sponsored H-1B visas for employees in engineering, geoscience, and technology roles. The transition typically depends on your performance, your role's ongoing business need, and timing relative to the H-1B cap lottery. Use Migrate Mate to review ExxonMobil's LCA filing history by occupation so you target roles with the strongest H-1B conversion track record.
What is the timeline for STEM OPT extension when working at ExxonMobil?
Your DSO must recommend the STEM OPT extension in SEVIS before you file Form I-765 with USCIS. File at least 90 days before your current OPT EAD expires. USCIS automatically extends your work authorization by 180 days while the application is pending, provided you filed on time. Processing typically takes several months, so early filing is essential.
How do I make my application stronger for OPT roles at ExxonMobil?
Align your degree field explicitly to the posted role's technical requirements, since ExxonMobil's recruiting teams evaluate degree-to-role fit carefully for OPT hires. Highlight any coursework or project experience in energy systems, reservoir engineering, or process optimization. Applying through ExxonMobil's early-career programs rather than general postings also increases your chances of landing a role with a defined H-1B sponsorship pathway.
How does ExxonMobil hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. ExxonMobil can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check ExxonMobil's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
