In this position...
We are seeking a hands-on Thermal Test Engineer to manage our state-of-the-art thermal lab, design specialized test fixtures, and lead all physical testing activities from component characterization to full vehicle validation for our EV thermal management systems. This role generates the empirical data that underpins all design and control decisions.
What you'll do...
- Lab Management: Work with other thermal test engineers and technicians to manage and maintain the thermal test lab facilities, including equipment calibration, scheduling, and ensuring a safe and efficient testing environment.
- Test Fixture Design: Collaborate with Design Engineers to design, procure, and validate specialized test fixtures for component, subsystem, and system-level thermal testing.
- Component & Subsystem Characterization: Plan and execute characterization tests for individual thermal components (pumps, valves, heat exchangers, compressors, etc.) and integrated subsystems (coolant loops, refrigeration circuits, HVAC modules). Provide empirical data to System Engineers for plant model validation.
- Full Vehicle Validation: Lead and execute comprehensive full vehicle thermal validation tests in environmental chambers, climatic wind tunnels, and on test tracks, simulating various real-world and extreme operating conditions.
- Data Acquisition & Analysis: Select, install, and calibrate appropriate instrumentation (thermocouples, pressure transducers, flow meters) and manage high-volume data acquisition systems. Analyze test data to assess performance, identify anomalies, and support root cause analysis.
- Test Automation: Develop and implement automated testing protocols for long-term durability and reliability cycles. Partner with systems and controls engineers to integrate robust safety loops and external monitoring, ensuring autonomous tests operate safely and fail gracefully under anomalous conditions.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed test plans, procedures, and reports summarizing test results, findings, and recommendations for various engineering teams.
- Troubleshooting: Provide critical empirical data and test expertise to support troubleshooting efforts across all thermal engineering disciplines.
You'll have...
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- 3+ years of experience in thermal testing, lab management, and/or test fixture design, preferably in the automotive industry.
- Strong practical knowledge of thermal measurement techniques, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
- Experience with environmental testing (e.g., climatic chambers, wind tunnels).
- Proficiency in data analysis tools using Python.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and schematics.
Even better, you may have...
- Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with EV thermal management component and system testing.
- Familiarity with test automation software (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, etc.).
- Familiarity with CAN/LIN/Ethernet communication protocols and working with smart devices.
You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

Target Ford's engineering rotational programs
Ford's rotational programs in vehicle engineering, electrification, and connected vehicle technology are structured entry points for OPT students. These programs often lead to full-time conversion, making them a more reliable path to H-1B sponsorship than one-off contract roles.
Verify Ford's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Your STEM OPT 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ford maintains active E-Verify enrollment, but confirm this directly with your Ford recruiter before signing an offer, since enrollment status can change by subsidiary or legal entity.
Align your degree field to the job description
USCIS requires your OPT work to be directly related to your degree. At Ford, software and electrical engineering roles map cleanly to most STEM degrees, but cross-functional roles in product marketing or operations may require documentation showing the degree connection.
Use Migrate Mate to find Ford OPT jobs by visa type
Migrate Mate filters open Ford roles by OPT eligibility and shows the company's H-1B and E-3 visa LCA filing history by job category, so you can see which departments have sponsored international employees before targeting your applications.
Prepare your I-983 training plan early
For STEM OPT, you and Ford's HR team must jointly complete Form I-983 before your extension begins. Raise this with your recruiter during the offer stage, not after you start, since Ford's HR processes for completing the training plan can take several weeks.
Time your OPT start date to Ford's hiring cycles
Ford's engineering and technology hiring peaks in the first quarter. Requesting an OPT start date that aligns with Ford's January through March intake window increases your chances of landing a full-time offer before your initial 12-month OPT period expires.
Ford Motor Company OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ford Motor Company sponsor OPT visas?
Ford Motor Company doesn't sponsor OPT itself, OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to F-1 students. What Ford does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. Ford is enrolled in E-Verify, which means it can also support the 24-month STEM OPT extension for eligible graduates in qualifying STEM degree fields.
Which departments at Ford Motor Company typically hire OPT students?
Ford most consistently hires OPT students in vehicle engineering, software and embedded systems, battery and electrification technology, data science, and supply chain operations. These teams align with STEM degree programs and carry the strongest potential for STEM OPT extension eligibility and eventual H-1B sponsorship.
How do I confirm my Ford role qualifies for STEM OPT extension?
Check that your degree appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List and that your job duties directly relate to that field. Your DSO at your university confirms eligibility and issues the updated I-20. Ford's HR team then completes the I-983 training plan with you as a co-signatory before you file with USCIS.
How do I find OPT-eligible job openings at Ford Motor Company?
Migrate Mate lists Ford roles filtered by visa type and shows Ford's historical LCA filing data by job category, helping you identify which teams have sponsored international hires before. You can also search Ford's careers portal directly and filter by full-time engineering or technology roles, which are most likely to accommodate OPT students.
Does Ford Motor Company sponsor H-1B visas after OPT ends?
Ford has a track record of sponsoring H-1B visas for employees who joined on OPT, particularly in engineering, software, and technical program management. H-1B sponsorship is a separate employer-filed petition and is not guaranteed, but Ford's participation in H-1B filings across multiple job categories makes the OPT-to-H-1B transition a realistic path for strong performers.
How does Ford Motor Company hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Ford Motor Company can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Ford Motor Company's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
