Target Jacobs's infrastructure and environmental divisions
Jacobs's strongest OPT hiring concentrates in civil, structural, and environmental engineering teams. When applying, filter for roles under its Critical Mission Solutions and People and Places Solutions segments, where project-based work aligns directly with STEM-designated OPT and STEM OPT extension eligibility.
Confirm Jacobs's E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask your recruiter or HR contact to confirm Jacobs's E-Verify participation before signing an offer, so your DSO can process the 24-month extension without last-minute eligibility issues.
Frame your degree field against the role's SOC code
Jacobs's STEM roles map to specific Standard Occupational Classification codes. Cross-reference your degree field with the job's O*NET occupation profile to confirm the STEM designation. A mismatch between your major and the listed SOC code can jeopardize your STEM OPT extension application at USCIS.
Apply through Migrate Mate to surface Jacobs's H-1B history
Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application filing data by employer and role, letting you see which Jacobs job titles have active H-1B LCA history. Use that data to prioritize roles with a demonstrated sponsorship track record before you apply, not after you receive an offer.
Start your OPT EAD application 90 days before graduation
USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. Missing this window delays your start date at Jacobs, since you can't begin work until your EAD card arrives and your authorized period begins. Coordinate timing with your DSO early.
Negotiate a start date that accounts for EAD card delivery
Jacobs's onboarding timelines are tied to project staffing cycles. When negotiating your start date, build in buffer for EAD delivery, which USCIS currently processes in several weeks. Proposing a start date two to three weeks after your expected card arrival protects both you and your hiring manager from delays.
Jacobs OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Jacobs sponsor OPT visas?
Jacobs doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students independently. What Jacobs does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extension, Jacobs's E-Verify enrollment is required, and the company has demonstrated consistent hiring of OPT students in engineering and technical roles.
Which departments at Jacobs typically hire OPT students?
Jacobs's engineering divisions, particularly those handling infrastructure, water, environmental, and transportation projects, are the most active in hiring OPT students. Roles in civil, structural, and environmental engineering, as well as project controls and construction management, tend to align well with STEM-designated programs eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
How do I find open OPT-eligible roles at Jacobs?
Search Jacobs's careers portal and filter for entry-level or early-career engineering positions. Migrate Mate also surfaces Jacobs roles alongside the company's H-1B LCA filing history by job title, helping you identify which positions have historically led to long-term sponsorship and prioritize those during your OPT job search.
How do I approach the H-1B transition after working at Jacobs on OPT?
Jacobs has sponsored H-1B visas across engineering and technical functions. After starting on OPT, establish your performance record early and raise the H-1B conversation with your manager or HR partner well before your OPT expires. Jacobs's HR team typically handles sponsorship through a formal internal process tied to headcount approval.
What should I include in my application to stand out for OPT roles at Jacobs?
Highlight project experience that maps directly to Jacobs's service lines, such as infrastructure design, environmental remediation, or construction management. Reference your degree's STEM designation and confirm your SOC code alignment using O*NET. Jacobs values applicants who demonstrate awareness of their authorization timeline and can clearly communicate their OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility.
How does Jacobs hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Jacobs can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Jacobs's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
