Align your degree to aerospace engineering roles
Joby Aviation's core technical work spans aeronautical, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines. Before applying, confirm your degree field maps to the specific role's requirements, since OPT authorization ties your work directly to your field of study under USCIS rules.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting STEM OPT
For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, Joby Aviation must be enrolled in E-Verify. Verify enrollment status directly with their recruiting team early in the offer stage, not after you've accepted, so your DSO can process the extension recommendation without delays.
Target propulsion, autonomy, and avionics teams specifically
Joby Aviation's engineering hiring clusters around electric propulsion systems, flight autonomy software, and avionics integration. Internship and new-grad roles in these teams have the clearest connection to STEM-designated degree programs, which strengthens your case for the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Use Migrate Mate to track Joby's H-1B filing history
Joby Aviation's H-1B Labor Condition Application filings, available through Migrate Mate, show which job titles and salary levels they've filed for previously. Use that data to benchmark your offer against prevailing wage expectations before signing, not after.
Request an offer letter with your start date in writing
Your DSO needs a formal offer letter specifying your start date and job title to recommend OPT on your I-20. Ask Joby Aviation's HR team for this document explicitly during the offer stage, since verbal confirmations aren't accepted by most university SEVIS coordinators.
Apply at least 90 days before your program end date
USCIS allows OPT applications up to 90 days before your degree completion date. At Joby Aviation, where technical hiring cycles can run several months, starting your job search early gives you time to clear interviews and still submit your OPT application within that window.
Joby Aviation OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Joby Aviation sponsor OPT visas?
Joby Aviation doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to eligible F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What Joby Aviation does is hire students already holding an OPT EAD and, for STEM OPT extensions, maintains E-Verify enrollment so qualifying employees can extend their authorization by 24 months.
Which roles at Joby Aviation are most accessible for OPT students?
Joby Aviation's strongest hiring for OPT students is in STEM-designated fields: electrical and mechanical engineering, software and controls engineering, and systems integration. These roles align with degree programs that qualify for the STEM OPT extension, which matters if you're planning the H-1B transition before your initial 12-month OPT period ends.
How do I navigate the OPT offer process at Joby Aviation?
Once Joby Aviation extends an offer, request a formal letter confirming your job title, start date, and work location. Bring that to your DSO to update your I-20 and recommend OPT. Submit your I-765 to USCIS with enough lead time, since USCIS processing can take several weeks and your EAD must arrive before your start date.
Does Joby Aviation support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
Joby Aviation's history of H-1B sponsorship across engineering and technical roles suggests they support the OPT-to-H-1B transition for strong performers. You can review their H-1B Labor Condition Application filings through Migrate Mate to see which job titles they've sponsored and what salary levels they've certified, which helps you plan the transition conversation with your manager early.
How do I know if my Joby Aviation offer meets prevailing wage requirements for STEM OPT?
STEM OPT doesn't impose a prevailing wage requirement the way H-1B does, but your compensation still can't be below what Joby Aviation pays comparable U.S. workers in the same role. You can cross-check your offer against DOL wage levels for your occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search tool before accepting.
How does Joby Aviation hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Joby Aviation can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Joby Aviation's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
