Align your degree to KBR's core disciplines
KBR recruits heavily in mechanical, civil, chemical, and systems engineering. Map your degree field to the exact job titles in their open roles before applying. A clear degree-to-role match reduces recruiter friction and strengthens your case for STEM OPT eligibility.
Verify KBR's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm KBR's active enrollment status through E-Verify's employer search before signing any offer. Enrollment is a USCIS requirement, not a company courtesy, and gaps in enrollment can invalidate your 24-month extension.
Target project-based teams with long hiring cycles
KBR staffs large infrastructure and energy projects that run multi-year timelines, which means they're more likely to invest in OPT hires who can transition to H-1B sponsorship. Prioritize roles tied to active government or industrial contracts rather than short-term project sprints.
Use Migrate Mate to identify KBR's visa filing history
Before applying, check Migrate Mate to review KBR's work visa filing history by role and location. This shows which positions have moved from OPT to H-1B sponsorship, so you can focus your applications on teams with a demonstrated track record of supporting visa transitions.
Negotiate your OPT start date around KBR's hiring cycles
KBR's manufacturing and engineering teams typically ramp up hiring around Q1 and Q3. Time your OPT start date to align with those cycles, since your 12-month clock begins on your authorized start date, not your employment start, giving you less flexibility once it's running.
Prepare your STEM OPT I-983 before your first review
KBR will need to sign your I-983 Training Plan as part of your STEM OPT extension. Have a draft ready by your 90-day performance review so HR isn't caught off guard. USCIS requires the form to be submitted to your DSO at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires.
KBR OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does KBR sponsor OPT visas?
KBR doesn't sponsor OPT directly, OPT is work authorization issued by USCIS to eligible F-1 students, not something employers file for. What KBR does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, KBR must be enrolled in E-Verify, which enables the extension through your designated school official.
Which roles at KBR are most likely to support OPT students?
KBR's strongest OPT hiring tends to cluster in engineering disciplines including mechanical, chemical, civil, and systems engineering, as well as project controls and technical operations. These roles align with the company's core work in industrial manufacturing, infrastructure, and energy projects, which require the degree-specific expertise that STEM OPT students typically bring.
How do I start the STEM OPT extension process while working at KBR?
You'll need to work with your DSO at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. KBR's HR or legal team must co-sign your I-983 Training Plan, which outlines your learning objectives and how your role ties to your degree. Confirm KBR's E-Verify enrollment is active before submitting anything to your DSO.
How long does the OPT-to-H-1B transition typically take at KBR?
H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on initial OPT and selected in the lottery, you'll remain work-authorized under cap-gap rules until October 1. STEM OPT students have more runway since the 24-month extension typically covers two full H-1B registration cycles. KBR's HR team should initiate the H-1B process well before the March registration window.
How do I find OPT-friendly roles at KBR before applying?
Use Migrate Mate to review KBR's work visa filing history filtered by role type and location. This lets you identify which KBR teams have a track record of supporting visa transitions rather than applying blindly. Pair that with KBR's own careers portal, filtering for engineering and technical roles that match your STEM-designated degree field.
How does KBR hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. KBR can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check KBR's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
