Target operations and engineering roles first
Koch's food and beverage facilities have the highest OPT hiring activity in process engineering, quality assurance, and supply chain. These teams are accustomed to onboarding F-1 students and understand the OPT EAD timeline, making them lower-friction entry points than corporate functions.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask Koch's recruiter directly during the offer stage, not after signing. If the specific facility isn't enrolled, you lose the 24-month extension and your authorization window drops to 12 months.
Align your degree to the role's SOC code
Use O*NET to identify the occupational code Koch's job posting maps to, then verify your degree field directly supports it. Misalignment between your STEM major and the posted role's classification is the most common reason STEM OPT extensions get flagged by USCIS.
Research Koch's H-1B filing history before applying
Koch's willingness to sponsor H-1B after OPT is what determines your long-term path. Use Migrate Mate to filter Koch's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by role and location, so you know which positions have led to H-1B sponsorship before you invest in the application.
Check prevailing wage expectations for your target site
Koch operates plants and offices across multiple states with different wage levels. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your role's SOC code at the specific location you're applying to, and benchmark your salary expectations before the offer conversation.
Time your application around OPT start date requirements
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date, but your EAD must be in hand before your first day. Apply early enough that USCIS processing doesn't create a gap between your program end date and your Koch start date.
Koch OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Koch sponsor OPT visas?
Koch doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, so you arrive with your EAD already in hand. What Koch does is hire students who are already authorized to work on OPT, and in many cases supports the transition to H-1B sponsorship once OPT authorization is running out.
Which departments at Koch typically hire OPT students?
Koch's strongest OPT hiring tends to concentrate in process engineering, quality assurance, supply chain, and operations roles tied to its food and beverage facilities. These functions regularly work with F-1 students on 12-month or STEM-extended OPT and have established processes for onboarding international candidates with EAD documentation.
How do I confirm Koch will support my STEM OPT extension?
Ask the recruiter directly whether the specific Koch facility or business unit is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT. Don't assume enrollment extends across all Koch entities. Get written confirmation during the offer stage, since starting work without a valid STEM OPT extension in place puts your status at risk.
How do I find Koch roles that have historically led to H-1B sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Koch's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title and work location. That data shows which roles and facilities Koch has actually filed H-1B petitions for in the past, giving you a concrete starting point rather than relying on recruiter assurances during the interview process.
What timeline should I expect from OPT to H-1B at Koch?
Your OPT EAD, including any STEM extension, gives you up to 36 months of work authorization. H-1B has an annual April filing window with an October 1 start date. If Koch sponsors your H-1B petition, the cap-gap rule protects your status between OPT expiration and the H-1B start date, provided the petition was filed on time.
How does Koch hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Koch can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Koch's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
