Align your degree to specialty occupation roles
Land O'Lakes fills roles in food science, agricultural engineering, and supply chain analytics that require field-specific degrees. Map your coursework to the job description's required qualifications before applying, because a degree-to-role mismatch is the fastest way to lose consideration for OPT-compatible positions.
Target rotational programs with STEM OPT eligibility
Land O'Lakes runs structured rotational and development programs in operations and supply chain. Roles coded under STEM-designated CIP fields extend your OPT authorization by 24 months through USCIS, so confirm your prospective role's SOC code aligns with a STEM-eligible classification before accepting any offer.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before your STEM extension
For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Land O'Lakes, as a large food manufacturing cooperative, is enrolled, but confirm enrollment status through E-Verify's employer search before your initial OPT EAD expires to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Research Land O'Lakes's H-1B filing history first
Use Migrate Mate to review Land O'Lakes's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title and location. This tells you which roles the company has historically moved from OPT to H-1B sponsorship, letting you target the positions most likely to lead to long-term employment.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search data
Land O'Lakes must pay prevailing wages for any future H-1B filing. Before accepting an offer, check the OFLC Wage Search for your job title and work location. If your offer falls at or above Level II for your SOC code, you're well-positioned for a smooth H-1B transition later.
Start the H-1B conversation during your OPT year
Don't wait until your OPT is nearly expired to raise H-1B sponsorship with your manager. Land O'Lakes's HR teams work on annual hiring cycles, and petition prep for the April H-1B lottery begins months earlier, so raise the conversation at your six-month performance review at the latest.
Land O'Lakes OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Land O'Lakes sponsor OPT visas?
Land O'Lakes doesn't sponsor OPT directly, because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not something employers petition for. What Land O'Lakes does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. The company is enrolled in E-Verify, which makes it eligible to employ STEM OPT extension holders as well.
Which departments at Land O'Lakes typically hire OPT students?
Food science, supply chain, agribusiness operations, and corporate finance are the departments where OPT students most commonly land roles at Land O'Lakes. Engineering and data analytics positions within the company's manufacturing and cooperative services divisions also appear regularly and often qualify for STEM OPT extensions based on their SOC codes.
How do I find which Land O'Lakes roles are compatible with my OPT EAD?
Use Migrate Mate to filter Land O'Lakes job listings by visa compatibility and review the company's LCA filing history by role and location. Cross-reference the listed SOC code against the USCIS STEM-designated degree program list to confirm whether a role supports the 24-month extension before you apply.
How do I approach the H-1B transition conversation with Land O'Lakes HR?
Raise H-1B sponsorship early in your OPT employment, ideally at your first formal performance review. Land O'Lakes HR teams plan headcount and legal budgets well before the April USCIS lottery registration window. Coming to the conversation with your job title, SOC code, and prevailing wage data from the OFLC Wage Search shows you've done the groundwork and makes the process easier for your employer to move forward.
What timeline should I expect for the OPT-to-H-1B process at Land O'Lakes?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date, so your employer needs to begin prep in January or February at the latest. If you're on a 12-month OPT EAD, you'll want your STEM extension approved and a cap-gap in place to bridge any gap between your OPT expiration and the H-1B start date.
How does Land O'Lakes hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Land O'Lakes can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Land O'Lakes's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
