Target technology and analytics roles first
Macy's Systems and Technology division hires OPT students for software engineering, data analytics, and systems integration roles. These positions align with STEM-designated degree programs, which means you're eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if the role qualifies.
Verify Macy's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Before signing an offer, confirm that Macy's is enrolled in E-Verify. STEM OPT requires your employer to be registered. Macy's corporate entities are generally enrolled, but the specific subsidiary on your offer letter is what USCIS checks when your DSO files your STEM extension.
Align your resume to specialty occupation standards
Macy's H-1B sponsorship after OPT is more likely when your role clearly requires a specific bachelor's degree field. Frame your resume around technical or analytical deliverables that connect your degree directly to the position, not just general retail or business responsibilities.
Search Macy's OPT jobs through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Macy's roles that match your OPT authorization and STEM eligibility. Migrate Mate filters employers by visa-filing history, so you can prioritize Macy's positions in departments with a stronger track record of supporting international hires through to H-1B.
Start your OPT application 90 days early
USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application at least 90 days before your program end date. Processing takes up to five months, so a delayed application can leave a gap between graduation and your Macy's start date, which can complicate onboarding and I-9 verification.
Negotiate a start date that fits your EAD timeline
Macy's corporate roles often have fixed onboarding cohorts, especially for summer and rotational programs. Confirm your EAD arrival date with your DSO before accepting a start date. Starting before your EAD is active violates your F-1 status, regardless of your offer letter terms.
Macy's OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Macy's sponsor OPT visas?
Macy's doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa the employer files for. What Macy's does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Macy's must be enrolled in E-Verify, which its corporate divisions generally are.
Which departments at Macy's typically hire OPT students?
Macy's Systems and Technology, data science, merchandising analytics, and corporate finance teams are the most common entry points for OPT students. These roles tend to align with STEM-designated programs, giving you access to the 24-month extension. Buying and planning roles also hire from business and supply chain degree programs.
How do I find OPT-eligible roles at Macy's?
Search Macy's careers page directly for corporate and technology roles that match your degree field. Migrate Mate is a useful tool here because it surfaces Macy's positions filtered by employer visa-filing history, helping you identify which departments have a stronger pattern of supporting international employees beyond the initial OPT period.
What is the timeline for starting at Macy's on OPT?
File your OPT EAD application with USCIS at least 90 days before your program end date since processing can take up to five months. Your OPT start date can be up to 60 days after graduation. Coordinate your EAD expected arrival date with your DSO before committing to a Macy's onboarding date.
Does Macy's support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
Macy's has sponsored H-1B visas for employees in technology, analytics, and corporate functions, particularly through its systems and technology division. Transitioning from OPT to H-1B depends on your role qualifying as a specialty occupation. The H-1B lottery runs each April for an October start, so your OPT must remain valid through that cycle.
How does Macy's hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Macy's can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Macy's's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
