Target corporate roles not restaurant operations
McDonald's OPT hiring concentrates in its Chicago and Dallas corporate offices, not franchise locations. Focus your search on business technology, digital experience, and supply chain teams, where structured full-time roles with OPT eligibility are far more common than in field operations.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
If you're pursuing the 24-month STEM OPT extension, McDonald's must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm this during the offer stage, not after signing. Corporate McDonald's entities are typically enrolled, but third-party contractors operating on their behalf may not be.
Align your degree to McDonald's tech job titles
STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree classification matching the role. Use O*NET to verify that your target McDonald's job title falls under a STEM-designated Standard Occupational Classification code before applying, so you don't discover a mismatch after your initial OPT period starts.
Use Migrate Mate to check McDonald's H-1B history
OPT is a bridge, not a destination. Search McDonald's on Migrate Mate to review its H-1B filing history by role and department. This tells you whether the company converts OPT workers to long-term status, which roles it's sponsored before, and whether your target team has a real sponsorship track record.
Apply through McDonald's internship pipeline early
McDonald's converts a meaningful share of its interns into full-time OPT hires. If your graduation date allows it, apply to McDonald's summer internship programs 12 to 18 months before your intended OPT start date to get inside the hiring funnel before full-time recruiting cycles open.
Time your OPT start date to McDonald's offer letter
USCIS lets you request an OPT start date up to 90 days before graduation and up to 60 days after. Coordinate your requested start date with McDonald's onboarding schedule. A misaligned OPT start date that precedes your offer letter by weeks can create gaps your employer's HR team isn't equipped to handle.
McDonald's OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does McDonald's sponsor OPT visas?
McDonald's doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not something employers petition for. What McDonald's does is hire students who already hold an OPT Employment Authorization Document. At the corporate level, McDonald's actively hires OPT students across technology, analytics, and supply chain functions.
Which departments at McDonald's typically hire OPT students?
Corporate McDonald's departments with the strongest OPT hiring track record include digital and technology, global business services, supply chain, and marketing analytics. These teams recruit through structured rotational programs and direct full-time hiring. Restaurant-level and franchise roles rarely accommodate OPT students due to their operational structure and ownership model.
How do I navigate the OPT hiring process at McDonald's?
Apply to corporate roles through McDonald's careers portal and flag your authorization type clearly in the application. Once you receive an offer, confirm the employing entity is enrolled in E-Verify if you plan to use the STEM OPT extension. Your DSO at your university handles the USCIS authorization request, not McDonald's HR.
How do I know if McDonald's will sponsor my H-1B after OPT?
OPT gives you up to three years of authorized work, but H-1B visa sponsorship after that depends entirely on McDonald's corporate policy and your role's classification. Use Migrate Mate to review McDonald's historical H-1B visa filings by job title and department. Roles with a track record of H-1B filings are the safest targets if long-term sponsorship matters to you.
What timeline should I expect from OPT application to starting at McDonald's?
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date, and processing typically takes two to four months. Coordinate your requested start date with McDonald's onboarding calendar. Corporate hiring cycles at McDonald's generally run on fixed quarterly schedules, so timing your OPT window to align with those cycles reduces the risk of a gap in authorization.
How does McDonald's hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. McDonald's can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check McDonald's's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
