Target newsroom and digital roles first
Nexstar's broadcast stations and digital properties have the highest OPT hiring activity in journalism, content production, and audience analytics. Focus your applications on local station openings and corporate digital teams before targeting back-office roles, which see less OPT movement.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Nexstar's E-Verify status with your hiring contact before your offer letter is finalized, so your DSO can process the extension without delays after your initial 12 months expire.
Align your degree field to the job description
Your OPT authorization is tied to your field of study. If you're applying to a data or analytics role at Nexstar, your degree must directly relate to that function. A mismatch between your major and the posted role can jeopardize STEM OPT eligibility later.
Use Migrate Mate to assess Nexstar's H-1B history
Nexstar's willingness to sponsor H-1B after OPT matters as much as getting hired. Use Migrate Mate to review Nexstar's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title, so you can gauge which roles have a realistic path from OPT to long-term sponsorship.
Submit your training plan before your OPT start date
USCIS requires a formal training plan on file for STEM OPT. Work with Nexstar's HR team to complete Form I-983 before your extension begins. HR teams at large media companies often need lead time, so initiate this conversation at least six weeks in advance.
Research prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
When Nexstar later files an H-1B on your behalf, your salary must meet DOL prevailing wage standards for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search and O*NET to identify your occupation's wage level now, so your initial offer aligns with future sponsorship requirements.
Nexstar Media Group OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nexstar Media Group sponsor OPT visas?
Nexstar Media Group doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to F-1 students, not something employers petition for. What Nexstar does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. Its H-1B sponsorship track record in media and broadcast roles suggests it's open to supporting the full OPT-to-H-1B transition for qualified candidates.
Which departments at Nexstar Media Group typically hire OPT students?
Nexstar's broadcast stations, digital content teams, and marketing and audience analytics departments are the most active areas for OPT hires. Roles in journalism, video production, digital strategy, and data analytics align well with STEM and non-STEM OPT. Corporate functions like finance and technology also surface openings but tend to move more selectively.
How do I confirm Nexstar Media Group supports STEM OPT extension?
Ask your Nexstar HR contact to confirm the specific legal entity enrolling you is registered in E-Verify, since large media companies often operate through subsidiary stations with separate EINs. Your DSO needs the E-Verify company ID to process your STEM OPT extension. Don't assume parent-company enrollment covers a local station.
How do I find OPT-eligible job openings at Nexstar Media Group?
Search Nexstar's careers page filtering by location and function, and cross-reference those postings with H-1B filing history to identify which roles have led to long-term sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Nexstar's Labor Condition Application data by job title, helping you prioritize openings that have a documented path beyond OPT.
How do I prepare for the OPT-to-H-1B transition at Nexstar Media Group?
Start the conversation with Nexstar HR about H-1B sponsorship before your OPT expires, ideally during your first performance review. H-1B registration opens in March each year for an October start, so timing matters. Confirm your role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines and that your compensation meets DOL prevailing wage requirements for your location and job title.
How does Nexstar Media Group hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Nexstar Media Group can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Nexstar Media Group's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
