Align your degree to billable practice areas
O'Melveny hires OPT students whose degrees map directly to its core practice groups: mergers and acquisitions, securities litigation, and regulatory compliance. Review the firm's published practice area descriptions and explicitly connect your field of study to one of those groups in your application materials.
Target business professional roles not only attorney positions
Most OPT hires at large law firms like O'Melveny land in business professional tracks: financial analysis, technology, marketing, or knowledge management. These roles have faster hiring cycles than attorney-track positions and are far more accessible to F-1 graduates on OPT EADs without a J.D.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before your OPT end date
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify at the time you file. Confirm O'Melveny's E-Verify status with HR before your 90-day OPT EAD application window opens, so a last-minute enrollment issue doesn't delay your extension request to USCIS.
Research O'Melveny's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Before accepting an offer, use Migrate Mate to review O'Melveny's H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history by role and office. A firm that consistently files for roles matching your function is a stronger long-term bet than one whose H-1B activity is concentrated in unrelated practice areas.
Submit your OPT EAD application 90 days early
USCIS allows you to file for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. Filing early protects your start date if processing runs long. Confirm your DSO submits the I-20 recommendation in SEVIS before you file Form I-765, as missing this step is the most common delay.
Negotiate your offer letter start date around EAD receipt
Your OPT employment can only begin on or after the start date printed on your EAD. When finalizing an offer with O'Melveny, build in buffer between your expected EAD receipt date and your proposed first day to avoid starting before your authorization is valid under USCIS rules.
O'Melveny & Myers LLP OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does O'Melveny & Myers LLP sponsor OPT visas?
O'Melveny & Myers LLP does not sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization that USCIS grants to eligible F-1 students. What O'Melveny does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, the firm must be enrolled in E-Verify, which is a separate employer obligation you should confirm with HR before filing.
Which roles at O'Melveny & Myers LLP are most accessible for OPT students?
Business professional roles in financial analysis, legal technology, compliance, and marketing are the most common entry points for OPT candidates at firms like O'Melveny. Legal research and paralegal positions are also available, particularly for candidates whose degrees align with the firm's active practice areas such as securities, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory matters.
How do I confirm O'Melveny & Myers LLP supports the OPT-to-H-1B transition?
Use Migrate Mate to review O'Melveny's Labor Condition Application filing history, which shows which roles and offices the firm has historically sponsored for H-1B visa. Firms with consistent H-1B filings in roles matching your background are the most reliable indicators that an OPT hire could lead to long-term sponsorship.
How do I time my OPT application to align with an O'Melveny offer?
File your OPT application with USCIS up to 90 days before your program end date to maximize the chance your EAD arrives before your intended start date. Coordinate your offer letter start date with O'Melveny HR to ensure it falls on or after the EAD start date printed on your card, since early start is prohibited under USCIS rules.
Does O'Melveny & Myers LLP hire internationally for legal and non-legal roles?
O'Melveny operates offices across the United States and recruits from law schools and graduate programs nationally. Both legal and business professional positions are open to international candidates with valid work authorization, including OPT EAD holders. The firm also sponsors H-1B and employment-based Green Card cases for qualifying employees after the OPT period.
How does O'Melveny & Myers LLP hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. O'Melveny & Myers LLP can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check O'Melveny & Myers LLP's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
