Align your degree to device-specific roles
Smith+Nephew hires OPT students into roles where a relevant technical degree is non-negotiable. Biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, and regulatory science degrees map cleanest to their core product lines. Generalist degrees in business or supply chain need a strong internship record in medical devices to compete.
Verify Smith+Nephew's E-Verify enrollment before applying
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Smith+Nephew's enrollment status before accepting an offer, since a gap there blocks your 24-month extension. E-Verify enrollment is maintained at the hiring entity level, so check the specific subsidiary or division offering the role.
Target R&D and regulatory affairs over sales roles
Smith+Nephew's R&D and regulatory affairs teams consistently require degree-specific technical skills that map directly to OPT authorization categories. Field sales and account management roles are harder to qualify under OPT because the degree-to-job connection is less direct and scrutinized more closely by USCIS.
Use Migrate Mate to find Smith+Nephew's H-1B filing history
OPT is your entry point, but H-1B sponsorship determines whether you can stay long-term. Use Migrate Mate to review Smith+Nephew's H-1B LCA filings by role and location before you accept an offer, so you know which positions have a clear path to sponsorship after your OPT period ends.
Time your application around Smith+Nephew's hiring cycles
Smith+Nephew runs structured campus and early-career recruiting for its medical devices divisions, typically peaking in late fall and early spring. Applying outside those windows through general job postings reduces your visibility. Internship conversion is the fastest path to a full-time OPT role at the company.
Benchmark your salary using OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
When Smith+Nephew extends an offer, your OPT salary should meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Pull the wage level for your job title and geographic area using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. A below-prevailing-wage offer creates problems if H-1B sponsorship follows.
Smith+Nephew OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Smith+Nephew sponsor OPT visas?
Smith+Nephew doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT authorization comes from USCIS directly to you as an F-1 student. What Smith+Nephew does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and the company has demonstrated a pattern of supporting the transition to H-1B sponsorship for eligible employees in technical and regulatory roles.
Which departments at Smith+Nephew typically hire OPT students?
R&D, regulatory affairs, quality engineering, and clinical operations are the departments most likely to hire OPT students at Smith+Nephew. These roles require specialized technical degrees that map directly to OPT authorization. Commercial and sales roles are less common pathways for OPT hires because the degree-to-job alignment is harder to establish.
How do I confirm Smith+Nephew will support my STEM OPT extension?
Before accepting an offer, confirm that the specific Smith+Nephew legal entity hiring you is enrolled in E-Verify, which is a federal requirement for STEM OPT extensions. Your designated school official will need this confirmation when filing your STEM OPT extension request with USCIS. Don't assume enrollment applies company-wide across all subsidiaries.
How do I find open OPT roles at Smith+Nephew?
Migrate Mate lists Smith+Nephew roles filtered for employers with active visa filing history, which helps you focus on positions that have historically led to work authorization. You can also apply directly through Smith+Nephew's careers portal and filter by early career or university programs, which are the most likely entry points for OPT candidates.
Does Smith+Nephew sponsor H-1B visas after OPT ends?
Smith+Nephew has sponsored H-1B visas across engineering, regulatory, and clinical functions. OPT is frequently the starting point for that path. The H-1B lottery runs annually in March for an October 1 start date, so if your OPT ends before October, you may need a cap-gap extension to maintain continuous work authorization during the transition.
How does Smith+Nephew hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Smith+Nephew can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Smith+Nephew's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
