Align your degree to midstream operations roles
Targa Resources focuses on natural gas gathering, processing, and transportation infrastructure. Engineering disciplines like chemical, mechanical, and petroleum map directly to technical roles, while finance and data analytics degrees align with commercial and operations planning teams. Match your transcript language to their posted job descriptions.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before applying
For your 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Targa Resources's current enrollment status through E-Verify's employer search before accepting any offer, so your extension authorization isn't delayed after your initial 12-month OPT period ends.
Time your OPT start date around Targa's hiring cycles
Energy infrastructure companies like Targa Resources typically convert interns and co-op students into full-time hires in late spring. Apply for your OPT EAD through your DSO at least 90 days before your program end date to ensure your authorization is active when offers are extended.
Research prevailing wage benchmarks before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for your occupation code in Targa Resources's Houston or operating-region offices. Knowing the Level I and Level II prevailing wages helps you evaluate whether an offer is competitive and positions you well for the H-1B Labor Condition Application later.
Use Migrate Mate to identify Targa's H-1B filing history
OPT is your authorization now, but your goal is transition. Use Migrate Mate to review Targa Resources's historical H-1B filings by job title and location, so you can target roles where the company has a documented pattern of sponsoring the same positions you're applying for.
Prepare your I-983 training plan before your offer closes
If you're pursuing a STEM OPT extension, your employer must co-sign Form I-983 detailing your training goals and supervision structure. Draft your I-983 training objectives using O*NET occupation profiles for your specific role before your offer letter is finalized, so Targa Resources's HR team can review and sign promptly.
Targa Resources OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Targa Resources sponsor OPT visas?
Targa Resources hires F-1 students who already hold OPT work authorization. USCIS grants OPT directly to the student, so Targa Resources doesn't file a petition for OPT itself. For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, Targa Resources must be enrolled in E-Verify and co-sign your I-983 training plan, which the company supports for qualifying roles.
Which departments at Targa Resources typically hire OPT students?
Engineering, operations, commercial, and financial planning teams are the most active hiring areas for OPT students at Targa Resources. Roles in pipeline operations, process engineering, data analytics, and finance align closely with the degree types that qualify for STEM OPT extension, giving those candidates both an initial hire and extension pathway.
How do I confirm Targa Resources supports the STEM OPT extension?
Ask the recruiter directly whether the role's SOC code qualifies under the STEM designated degree list and confirm Targa Resources's E-Verify enrollment status before signing your offer. You can also verify E-Verify participation through the public E-Verify employer search. Migrate Mate can show you the job titles Targa has historically sponsored, helping you target the right roles.
How do I approach Targa Resources about H-1B sponsorship after OPT?
Raise H-1B sponsorship during the offer negotiation stage, not after you start. Ask HR whether the role has a defined H-1B sponsorship track and what the typical timeline looks like from OPT hire to H-1B filing. Companies in the energy sector generally begin the Labor Condition Application process well before the October 1 H-1B cap-subject start date.
What is the typical timeline for starting at Targa Resources on OPT?
Your OPT EAD must be in hand before your start date, so apply through your DSO at least 90 days before your program end date. Once Targa Resources extends an offer, HR will need your EAD card number and expiration date for I-9 verification. Factor in processing time with USCIS when planning your availability for a target start date.
How does Targa Resources hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Targa Resources can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Targa Resources's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
