Target your degree to matching roles
Target's corporate teams hire OPT students into roles where your degree field must directly match the job. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's typical education requirements before applying, so your EAD authorization aligns with what Target's recruiters expect from a specialty role.
Verify Target's E-Verify enrollment early
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Target's enrollment status before accepting an offer, not after. Target's size makes enrollment likely, but verifying upfront protects your ability to extend authorization without a last-minute scramble.
Apply through Target's campus recruiting channels
Target runs structured campus recruitment programs for corporate roles in Minneapolis. Applications through these programs reach hiring managers already familiar with OPT timelines and EAD start dates, unlike general postings where recruiters may not know how to handle work authorization questions specific to F-1 students.
Frame your OPT timeline in the offer conversation
Standard OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization, with a 60-day grace period after graduation. Raise your EAD start date and OPT end date directly during offer negotiation so Target's HR team can align your onboarding timeline and plan for H-1B sponsorship well before your authorization expires.
Research Target's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
OPT is only your first step. Search Target on Migrate Mate to see its H-1B and EB-2/EB-3 filing history by role and department. This shows which corporate functions at Target regularly convert OPT employees to long-term sponsored status, helping you target the right team from day one.
Benchmark your salary using OFLC Wage Search
Target sets compensation by job zone and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the prevailing wage for your specific role in Minneapolis or at Target's distribution hubs. Entering at or above the prevailing wage level strengthens your position when H-1B sponsorship conversations begin after OPT.
Target OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Target sponsor OPT visas?
Target doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT work authorization is granted by USCIS directly to eligible F-1 students. What Target does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and it has a track record of supporting those employees through the OPT-to-H-1B transition in corporate functions like technology, merchandising, and supply chain.
Which departments at Target typically hire OPT students?
Target's Minneapolis corporate headquarters is the primary location for OPT hires. Roles in technology, data science, finance, merchandising, and supply chain operations are the most consistent entry points. These teams hire for specialty occupation roles that align with the degree requirements underlying both OPT authorization and eventual H-1B eligibility.
How do I navigate the OPT application process when accepting an offer from Target?
Your DSO at your university handles your OPT application with USCIS, not Target. Once you have your EAD in hand, provide Target's HR team with your EAD details, start date, and end date during onboarding. Give yourself enough lead time before graduation to apply, as USCIS processing can take several weeks.
How do I know if Target will sponsor my H-1B after my OPT ends?
H-1B sponsorship decisions are role-specific and not guaranteed at the OPT stage. Use Migrate Mate to review Target's H-1B filing history by job title and department before you accept an offer. Asking your recruiter directly about Target's sponsorship policy for your specific role during the offer stage is also a practical step.
What is the timeline for STEM OPT extension when working at Target?
You can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires. USCIS requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify, and your DSO must recommend the extension in your SEVIS record. Target's enrollment in E-Verify makes it eligible to support STEM OPT extensions for qualifying degree holders.
How does Target hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Target can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Target's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
