Align your degree to Wabtec's engineering needs
Wabtec's core hiring spans mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Match your resume's skills section directly to the propulsion systems, brake controls, or embedded software language in each job posting. Generic engineering resumes get filtered out before a recruiter sees them.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Wabtec's size and federal contracting work mean enrollment is standard, but verify the specific hiring entity, since subsidiaries or acquired divisions sometimes operate under separate EINs with different E-Verify status.
Time your OPT start date around Wabtec's hiring cycles
Wabtec runs structured internship and new-graduate cohorts, typically targeting spring and fall starts. Request your OPT start date from your DSO to align with an actual offer timeline, not the earliest possible date, so you don't burn authorization months waiting for onboarding.
Search verified OPT-friendly roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Wabtec job listings by OPT eligibility and see the company's H-1B filing history by role and department. That data tells you which teams have actually moved OPT students into sponsored status, not just which postings mention visa support.
Frame your H-1B transition plan during the interview
Wabtec's recruiting teams in rail and industrial automation are familiar with OPT-to-H-1B pipelines. Raise your authorization timeline directly, mention your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility, and ask about the company's H-1B sponsorship process. Proactive clarity speeds internal approvals.
Use O*NET to validate your specialty occupation claim
Before applying, look up your target role in O*NET and confirm it classifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Wabtec roles in systems engineering and software development typically meet this threshold, but job titles in operations or program management need closer review.
Wabtec OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wabtec sponsor OPT visas?
Wabtec hires F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD, which USCIS grants directly to you as a student. Wabtec does not petition or file for OPT itself. The company is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required if you plan to use the 24-month STEM OPT extension after your initial 12-month period ends.
Which departments at Wabtec typically hire OPT students?
Engineering roles in propulsion, braking systems, embedded software, and digital intelligence see the most OPT hiring at Wabtec. Supply chain, manufacturing engineering, and data analytics roles also appear. Roles closer to field services or program management require closer review since they may not meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS requires for later H-1B sponsorship.
How do I apply for OPT jobs at Wabtec?
Apply through Wabtec's careers portal and disclose your OPT authorization status in the application. Provide your EAD details during the offer stage. Your DSO handles the USCIS OPT authorization process through SEVIS independently of Wabtec. Use Migrate Mate to identify which Wabtec roles have supported OPT students and led to H-1B sponsorship in the same department.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at Wabtec?
Most OPT students at large employers like Wabtec target H-1B registration in the spring of their first or second year of employment. USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. With a 12-month OPT period plus a 24-month STEM extension, you typically have enough runway to attempt the lottery at least twice before your authorization expires.
Does Wabtec's STEM OPT extension require any action from the company?
Yes. For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, USCIS requires Wabtec to be enrolled in E-Verify and to sign a formal training plan called a Form I-983. Your DSO submits the extension application, but Wabtec's HR team must complete their portion of the I-983 before the application goes to USCIS. Start this process at least 90 days before your initial OPT period ends.
How does Wabtec hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Wabtec can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Wabtec's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
