Align your degree with retail tech roles
Whatnot's OPT hires skew toward computer science, data science, and business analytics graduates. Before applying, confirm your degree field maps directly to the role's listed requirements so your EAD authorization holds up under specialty occupation scrutiny during any future H-1B transition.
Verify Whatnot's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Whatnot's active enrollment status with HR before signing your offer, since losing that extension eligibility mid-employment significantly shortens your authorized work window without an H-1B in place.
Target engineering and data teams directly
Whatnot's fastest-moving OPT opportunities sit in backend engineering, machine learning, and marketplace analytics. Applying through team-specific job postings rather than general listings increases your visibility to hiring managers who already understand OPT timelines and have hired international students before.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search data
Use OFLC Wage Search to check prevailing wage levels for your role and location before negotiating. Whatnot's retail tech salaries in Los Angeles and New York tend to sit at or above Level II prevailing wages, which positions you well for an H-1B filing later.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified OPT-friendly roles
Search Migrate Mate to filter Whatnot job listings by OPT eligibility and cross-reference the company's H-1B filing history by role. That filing history signals which teams have consistently hired and transitioned international employees, so you can prioritize roles with a proven sponsorship track record.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your start date
For STEM OPT, your signed I-983 training plan must be on file with your Designated School Official before you start work. Coordinate with Whatnot's HR team at least two weeks ahead so they can complete their sections and you avoid any gap in authorized employment.
Whatnot OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor OPT visas?
Whatnot hires F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD, so you bring your own work authorization rather than receiving a company-filed petition. What Whatnot does provide is employer support for STEM OPT extensions, including E-Verify enrollment and I-983 training plan completion, and the company has a track record of sponsoring H-1B visas for employees after OPT ends.
Which departments at Whatnot typically hire OPT students?
Engineering, data science, product, and marketplace operations are the departments where Whatnot most consistently hires OPT students. Roles in backend infrastructure, machine learning, and analytics align well with STEM-designated degree fields, which matters if you plan to apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension through USCIS.
How do I confirm Whatnot supports the STEM OPT extension?
Ask Whatnot's HR team directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify, since E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for employers participating in the STEM OPT extension program. You can also search Migrate Mate to review Whatnot's visa filing history, which gives context on how actively the company supports international employees beyond initial OPT hiring.
How do I time my OPT job search at Whatnot around my program end date?
USCIS recommends applying for OPT no earlier than 90 days before your program end date, and your EAD must arrive before you start work. Begin outreach to Whatnot's recruiting team at least three to four months before your intended start date, since their interview process typically spans several weeks across technical and hiring-manager rounds.
Does Whatnot transition OPT employees to H-1B sponsorship?
Whatnot has sponsored H-1B visas for employees in engineering and technical roles, making the OPT-to-H-1B pathway a realistic outcome for strong performers. H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start date, so align your OPT timeline with your program end date to avoid a gap in work authorization during the transition.
How does Whatnot hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Whatnot can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Whatnot's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
