Get your state licensing lined up early
Insurance Agents must hold a state-issued Property and Casualty or Life and Health license before they can write policies. Start your prelicensing coursework and schedule your state exam before you begin applying, so your credentials are ready when Shelter reviews your candidacy.
Target Shelter's captive agency model directly
Shelter operates through captive agents tied to specific territories. Search for openings by state rather than nationally, and frame your application around local market knowledge and client development skills that fit the captive, community-focused model Shelter runs.
Surface your book-of-business potential in interviews
Shelter agents earn through commissions, so hiring managers evaluate whether you can build a client base. Quantify any prior sales experience, bilingual skills, or community ties that signal you can generate policies, reducing the perceived risk of sponsoring an international candidate.
Clarify the LCA and I-129 timeline before accepting an offer
For H-1B transfers or new petitions, Shelter's HR team must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS can adjudicate the I-129. Confirm internally who manages the petition, whether premium processing is available, and what start-date flexibility exists.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Insurance Agent roles at Shelter

Find Insurance Agent at Shelter Insurance Companies JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Shelter Insurance Companies sponsor H-1B visas for Insurance Agents?
Yes, Shelter Insurance Companies has sponsored H-1B visas for Insurance Agent roles. Because the H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, Shelter typically files for candidates whose role involves actuarial analysis, risk assessment, or financial planning rather than purely entry-level sales. Confirm the specific job scope with the recruiter before assuming sponsorship is automatic.
Which visa types does Shelter Insurance Companies support for Insurance Agent roles?
Shelter has sponsored H-1B, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT candidates for Insurance Agent positions, and has also hired under the TN visa category for qualifying Canadian and Mexican nationals in business or finance occupations. If you're on OPT, confirm whether the role qualifies for a STEM extension, since insurance analysis roles often do when the function is quantitative.
What qualifications does Shelter Insurance Companies expect for Insurance Agent candidates?
Shelter looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related field, plus a valid state insurance license or the ability to obtain one quickly. Prior sales experience, strong interpersonal skills, and familiarity with Property and Casualty or Life products strengthen your application. Bilingual candidates are competitive in markets with large non-English-speaking populations.
How do I apply for Insurance Agent jobs at Shelter Insurance Companies?
You can find Insurance Agent openings at Shelter Insurance Companies on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles with confirmed visa sponsorship so you don't waste applications on positions that won't support your status. Once you identify a relevant opening, apply directly through Shelter's careers portal and note your visa type and authorization timeline in your cover materials to give the hiring team a clear picture upfront.
How do I time my application around the H-1B cap if I'm on OPT?
USCIS opens H-1B cap registrations in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, you need an employer like Shelter to submit a registration on your behalf before that window closes. Build your timeline backward from March and have an offer in place by February at the latest. If you're not selected in the lottery, a 24-month STEM OPT extension keeps you authorized while you register again the following year.
