Map your role to USMCA professions
Before applying, confirm your target role at Dorsey & Whitney aligns with a recognized USMCA profession. Legal professionals, accountants, and engineers are common fits. Review the O*NET occupation profile for your role to gather the precise language Dorsey will need in your offer letter.
Prepare credential documentation before outreach
Dorsey's hiring teams will ask for degree credentials early. Have your official transcripts, credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. or Canada, and professional licenses ready before you submit. Gaps in documentation slow the offer letter process and signal unpreparedness to legal employers.
Target practice groups with recurring non-citizen hiring
Dorsey & Whitney's corporate transactional, intellectual property, and compliance teams regularly hire internationally educated professionals whose credentials map to TN-eligible categories. Focus applications on these groups rather than litigation-heavy practices, where bar admission requirements often limit TN-eligible roles.
Clarify TN letter requirements with the recruiter
When you receive an offer, confirm the letter explicitly states your professional category, job duties, and the one-year initial admission period. Dorsey's legal operations team typically drafts these letters, but you're responsible for verifying the details match what you'll present at the port of entry or consulate.
Use Migrate Mate to verify Dorsey's TN hiring history
Check Dorsey & Whitney's TN-related hiring activity before investing time in an application. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-specific data so you can confirm which roles and departments have supported TN professionals, helping you prioritize outreach to the right practice groups and hiring contacts.
Understand Canadian versus Mexican entry differences
Canadian nationals present their Dorsey offer letter directly at a U.S. port of entry without a prior visa appointment. Mexican nationals must schedule a TN visa interview at a U.S. consulate. Build consulate wait times into your timeline if you're a Mexican national so your start date stays realistic.
Dorsey & Whitney LLP TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dorsey & Whitney LLP sponsor TN visas?
Dorsey & Whitney LLP supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals in roles that align with USMCA-recognized professions. The firm does not file a petition with USCIS. You present Dorsey's offer letter at the port of entry or U.S. consulate yourself to obtain TN status.
Which roles at Dorsey & Whitney typically qualify for TN status?
Roles in legal services, corporate compliance, accounting, and technology functions are most likely to map to USMCA professions at Dorsey & Whitney. Positions requiring a specific bachelor's degree in a recognized field, such as accountant, engineer, or scientific roles, have the clearest TN eligibility. Roles requiring U.S. bar admission are generally not TN-eligible.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from Dorsey & Whitney LLP?
Once Dorsey issues your offer letter confirming your role, duties, and professional category, Canadian nationals can proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a consulate interview and obtain a TN visa stamp first. USCIS is not involved in either process. Review the letter carefully before traveling to confirm all details are accurate.
How long does it take to get TN status through Dorsey & Whitney LLP?
For Canadian nationals, admission is granted at the border on the day of entry, assuming documents are in order. Mexican nationals depend on consulate appointment availability, which can add several weeks. Dorsey's internal process for preparing the offer letter typically takes one to two weeks after your start date is confirmed.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at Dorsey & Whitney LLP?
Migrate Mate lists open roles at employers like Dorsey & Whitney that have supported TN professionals, so you can target positions with a realistic path to TN admission. Cross-reference any role you find against the USMCA professions list before applying, and confirm your degree directly matches the job's educational requirements before contacting the recruiter.
How does TN visa admission work at Dorsey & Whitney LLP?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Dorsey & Whitney LLP, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
