Match your degree to USMCA professions
TN admission requires your specific degree field to align with one of the designated USMCA profession categories. For First Solar roles, engineering and scientific disciplines typically satisfy this requirement, but your transcript must show the qualifying field, not just a related area of study.
Target First Solar's engineering and R&D teams
First Solar's solar panel manufacturing and thin-film photovoltaic research divisions consistently hire professionals in electrical, chemical, and materials engineering. Focusing your applications on these departments puts you in the strongest position for a role that clearly maps to a USMCA-eligible occupation.
Search First Solar's LCA history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review First Solar's historical visa filing data by role and location. This helps you identify which job titles and facilities have the strongest sponsorship track record, so you can prioritize the applications most likely to result in an offer.
Request a detailed offer letter from HR
The offer letter First Solar provides is your primary TN document at the port of entry or consulate. It must state your job title, qualifying USMCA profession category, salary, and employment duration. Ask HR explicitly to include all four elements before your border or consulate appointment.
Prepare for port-of-entry examination as a Canadian
Canadian nationals present TN documentation directly to a CBP officer without a prior visa stamp. Bring your First Solar offer letter, professional credentials, and degree transcripts in original or certified form. CBP officers at major land crossings and airports are familiar with clean-energy employer filings.
Benchmark your offered salary using OFLC Wage Search
Before accepting an offer, verify your salary against the prevailing wage for your occupation and First Solar's facility location using OFLC Wage Search. While TN has no formal prevailing-wage requirement, an offer that falls below regional market rates can signal misclassification of your role during CBP review.
First Solar TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does First Solar sponsor TN visas?
Yes, First Solar supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions. The company issues offer letters for eligible roles, primarily in engineering, science, and technical fields tied to its solar manufacturing and research operations. First Solar does not file a petition with USCIS because TN is treaty-based admission, not an employer-sponsored petition.
Which roles at First Solar typically qualify for TN admission?
Roles in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, and manufacturing process development align most consistently with USMCA-eligible profession categories at First Solar. Research scientists and quality assurance engineers working in thin-film photovoltaic production also frequently qualify. The role's stated duties and your degree field must both map to a recognized USMCA profession category.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at First Solar?
Search First Solar's careers page for roles in engineering and R&D, then cross-reference the job titles against the USMCA professions list. Migrate Mate also surfaces First Solar's visa filing history by role type, which helps you identify which positions have historically supported foreign national hires before you invest time in an application.
How do I start the TN process once First Solar extends an offer?
Once you receive an offer, ask First Solar's HR team to issue a formal offer letter confirming your job title, USMCA profession category, salary, and intended employment period. Canadian nationals then present this letter directly to a CBP officer at the port of entry. Mexican nationals must schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment at a U.S. consulate before traveling.
How long does TN admission typically take at the border or consulate?
Canadian nationals applying at a port of entry are typically processed the same day, though CBP review times vary by location and officer caseload. Mexican nationals applying through a U.S. consulate follow the standard nonimmigrant visa appointment schedule, which can range from a few days to several weeks depending on consulate availability. USCIS does not adjudicate TN admissions for Canadians.
How does TN visa admission work at First Solar?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from First Solar, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
