Match your credentials to USMCA professions
Fish & Richardson hires across legal, technical, and professional functions, but TN eligibility is defined by the USMCA professions list, not job titles. Cross-reference your occupation against that list and confirm your degree field directly supports the role before applying.
Target patent and IP technical roles
Fish & Richardson's core practice is intellectual property, so roles requiring scientific or engineering backgrounds, such as patent agent or technical specialist positions, align most naturally with TN-eligible occupation categories. Focus your search on departments that directly support patent prosecution or litigation support.
Request a detailed offer letter covering TN requirements
At the border or consulate, your offer letter must specify your job title, the USMCA profession category it falls under, your qualifications, and the duration of employment. Ask Fish & Richardson's HR team explicitly for a letter that addresses each of these elements before your travel date.
Verify your prevailing wage position using OFLC Wage Search
Although TN doesn't require an LCA, arriving at salary negotiations informed strengthens your position. Look up the wage level for your occupation and location using OFLC Wage Search so you can confirm Fish & Richardson's offer is competitive within the legal services industry.
Use Migrate Mate to identify Fish & Richardson's hiring patterns
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review which roles Fish & Richardson has historically supported for work authorization. This helps you target the job titles and practice groups most likely to move quickly on TN candidates rather than spending time on roles with no sponsorship history.
Prepare your credential documentation before the interview stage
TN admission requires proof that your degree aligns with the offered role. Gather your official transcripts, any professional licenses, and translated documents well before your first interview. Fish & Richardson's hiring timeline in competitive practice areas moves quickly, and documentation gaps can delay your border crossing.

The firm issues an offer letter that you present at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. There is no USCIS petition involved. Eligibility depends on your occupation category and your qualifying credentials.
Which roles at Fish & Richardson are most likely to qualify for TN status?
Fish & Richardson's focus on intellectual property and litigation means technical and professional roles, such as patent agents, scientists, engineers, and certain legal professionals, are the most natural fit for TN admission. Business, accounting, and computer systems analyst roles within firm operations may also qualify depending on the specific position and degree requirements.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from Fish & Richardson?
Once Fish & Richardson extends an offer, work with their HR or legal operations team to obtain a formal offer letter that specifies your USMCA occupation category, role description, and employment duration. Canadian nationals present this letter directly at a land port of entry or preclearance location. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate for a TN visa stamp before traveling.
How long does TN admission take for Fish & Richardson hires?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission at the border in a single visit, often within a few hours, assuming documents are complete and the officer is satisfied. Mexican nationals typically wait several weeks for a consular appointment. Can I switch from OPT or H-1B status to TN at Fish & Richardson?
Yes, if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship and your role at Fish & Richardson qualifies under the USMCA professions list, you can transition from OPT or H-1B visa status to TN. The most straightforward method is to travel outside the U.S. and re-enter as a TN professional rather than attempting a change of status internally, which carries more complexity for TN.
How does TN visa admission work at Fish & Richardson?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required.
