Match your occupation to USMCA categories
Before applying, verify your job title maps to a recognized USMCA profession. Harris County hires across engineering, social work, accounting, and public health. Cross-reference your role against the official USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility before reaching out.
Target departments with credential-heavy hiring
Harris County's Public Health, Engineering, and Budget Management departments consistently recruit degree-qualified professionals. These units align well with USMCA-eligible occupations. Focusing your search on these departments increases your odds of landing a role that supports TN admission naturally.
Request a detailed offer letter upfront
Harris County must issue an offer letter describing your role, required credentials, and employment terms. Ask HR explicitly for USMCA-compliant language covering job duties and degree requirements. Border officers and consular officials scrutinize this letter, so vague language can cause unnecessary delays or denials.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC Wage Search
TN status has no formal prevailing wage requirement, but your offered salary should reflect your occupation and region. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm Harris County's offer aligns with wage levels for your role in the Houston metro area before accepting.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TN roles
Searching broadly for government jobs wastes time if positions don't support TN admission. Migrate Mate filters Harris County listings by visa type, surfacing roles where TN candidates are actively welcomed, so you're targeting openings matched to your authorization from the start.
Prepare your credential documents before interviewing
Canadian and Mexican nationals both need original degree certificates, transcripts, and professional licenses ready before admission. If your credentials are in another language, get certified translations completed early. Delays in document preparation are the most common avoidable bottleneck in the TN process.
Harris County TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Harris County sponsor TN visas?
Harris County supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions. It doesn't file a petition or pay USCIS fees on your behalf. You present the offer letter at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. Roles in public health, engineering, and social services are common TN pathways at Harris County.
Which departments at Harris County typically hire TN professionals?
Departments with credential-intensive hiring tend to be the strongest fit. Harris County's Public Health Services, Engineering, Budget Management, and social services divisions regularly recruit professionals in USMCA-eligible occupations. Roles requiring specific degrees in fields like civil engineering, accounting, social work, or public health align well with TN admission categories.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Harris County offer?
Once Harris County issues your offer letter, Canadians can seek TN admission directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a TN visa stamp before traveling. Either way, you'll need your offer letter, original degree credentials, and supporting documentation confirming your occupation qualifies under USMCA.
How long does TN admission take at Harris County?
Canadians entering at a land border or preclearance airport typically receive a decision the same day. Mexican nationals must allow additional time for a consular appointment, which varies by location and demand. TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying position at Harris County.
How do I find current TN job openings at Harris County?
Harris County posts openings through its official careers portal, but not all listings indicate visa support. Migrate Mate filters Harris County roles by TN eligibility, so you can identify positions where your status is a realistic fit without manually reviewing every posting. Targeting credential-heavy departments improves your chances of finding a role that supports TN admission.
How does TN visa admission work at Harris County?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Harris County, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
