Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN admission is limited to occupations on the USMCA professions list. Before applying to HED, confirm your degree field aligns with a qualifying profession. A mismatch between your credentials and the role description is the most common reason TN admission gets refused.
Target retail operations and support functions
HED's TN hires tend to concentrate in functions like management analysis, finance, and engineering rather than frontline retail. Prioritize roles where your professional credentials directly support those department needs, and frame your application materials around the operational problems you'll solve.
Request a detailed offer letter early
HED's offer letter must describe your role, the professional category it falls under, and your intended duration of employment. Ask HR to confirm these details are included before your border or consulate appointment, since a vague letter is the fastest way to delay admission.
Verify your wage against OFLC prevailing rates
Before accepting an offer from HED, run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search. TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage filing, but confirming your offered salary is competitive protects you if a border officer asks about compensation during admission.
Use Migrate Mate to identify HED's active TN roles
Finding which HED roles are genuinely open to TN professionals isn't always clear from a job listing alone. Migrate Mate surfaces HED's sponsorship history by visa type, so you can focus your applications on positions where TN admission is a real, documented outcome.
Prepare your O*NET occupation profile for the port of entry
Canadian nationals entering at a land border or airport need to show their role qualifies under TN. Print the O*NET occupation profile for your position and bring it alongside your offer letter. Border officers often cross-reference the listed duties against the USMCA profession definition.
HED TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does HED sponsor TN visas?
HED supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for qualifying roles. TN is not a petition-based visa, so there's no employer filing or USCIS involvement. HED's role is to provide documentation confirming your position, professional category, and employment terms. You present that letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate to obtain TN admission.
Which roles at HED typically qualify for TN admission?
TN eligibility depends on the USMCA professions list, not HED's internal titles. At HED, roles in management analysis, accounting, engineering, and computer systems analysis are the most likely matches. Frontline retail positions generally don't qualify because they don't map to a recognized USMCA profession requiring a relevant degree.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from HED?
Once HED extends an offer, ask HR to prepare a support letter that specifies your role, the USMCA profession category, your anticipated start date, and employment duration. Canadian nationals can present this letter directly at a port of entry. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment and attend an interview before admission.
How long does TN admission typically take at HED?
For Canadian nationals entering at a land border, TN admission is often granted the same day if documentation is complete. Airport processing can take a few hours. Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate face appointment wait times that vary by location and season, so planning at least several weeks ahead is practical.
How do I find current TN-eligible job openings at HED?
Search HED's careers page filtering for roles that align with USMCA professions. Migrate Mate also shows HED's visa sponsorship history by type, helping you identify which departments have historically supported TN candidates. Applying to roles that match both your credentials and a qualifying profession gives your candidacy the strongest footing.
How does TN visa admission work at HED?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from HED, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
