INTRODUCTION
The Gonzalez Lab at UCSF is seeking an energetic, curious, and driven Postdoctoral Scientist interested in systems neuroscience to join our research team. The Gonzalez lab focuses on identifying the fundamental mechanisms by which neurons process information and control behavior in mice and songbirds. We place particular emphasis on advanced optical approaches, including multiphoton microscopy, Bessel-beam imaging, and closed-loop patterned stimulation, to record and manipulate neuronal activity in behaving animals with high spatiotemporal precision. By combining these cutting-edge optical methods with electrophysiology and quantitative behavioral paradigms, we aim to uncover how neural circuits control complex motor behaviors and how their breakdown contributes to disorders of speech and movement. Our multidisciplinary approach integrates tool development with molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience.
As a Postdoctoral Scientist in the Gonzalez Lab, you will have the chance to bring your enthusiasm, ideas, and expertise to various ongoing and new projects. Some of the research areas we are exploring include:
- Internal error correction mechanism of motor circuits.
- Integration of visuo-acoustic sensory feedback during vocal behaviors.
- Memory and learning during offline periods (sleep).
- Long-range neuronal communication and stroke.
- Brain-machine interfaces to enhance learning and performance of complex behaviors.

Verify your role fits USMCA professions
TN admission is limited to occupations explicitly listed under USMCA. At HHMI, research scientist, biochemist, biologist, and engineer roles typically qualify. Cross-check your job title against the USMCA professions list before applying to confirm your position is eligible.
Match your degree to the specific role
HHMI research positions often require a degree in the exact scientific discipline the role covers. A biology degree supporting a bioinformatics position may face scrutiny at the border. Confirm your credential directly maps to the offered title before the offer letter is drafted.
Request a detailed offer letter early
HHMI's HR team must issue an offer letter describing your title, duties, and how the role fits a USMCA profession. Request this before your border appointment. Vague duty descriptions are a common reason for TN delays, so push for precise, occupation-specific language.
Prepare credential documents for border presentation
Canadian nationals present TN documents directly at a port of entry. Bring your HHMI offer letter, degree transcripts, and any professional licenses. Original documents or certified copies carry more weight than photocopies, particularly for scientific roles requiring advanced credentials.
Search HHMI roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify HHMI positions aligned with TN-eligible occupations. Filtering by role type and visa category helps you target openings where your USMCA profession classification is a strong fit before you invest time in a full application.
Check prevailing wage expectations before negotiating
While TN doesn't require an LCA, knowing regional wage benchmarks for your scientific role strengthens your offer negotiation. Use the OFLC Wage Search or Bureau of Labor Statistics data to confirm HHMI's offered salary aligns with your occupation and location.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) sponsor TN visas?
HHMI supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions, particularly scientific and research roles. Rather than filing a petition, HHMI issues an offer letter that the worker presents at a U.S. port of entry or consulate. Eligible roles typically include research scientists, biologists, biochemists, and engineers.
Which departments or roles at HHMI typically support TN admission?
HHMI's research laboratories and scientific programs are the most common fit for TN professionals. Roles in life sciences, computational biology, bioengineering, and laboratory operations align well with USMCA-listed professions. Administrative or program management positions are less likely to qualify unless the duties match a recognized USMCA occupation category.
How do I start the TN process for a role at HHMI?
Once HHMI extends a job offer, request a detailed offer letter specifying your title, duties, and the USMCA profession your role falls under. Canadian nationals then present this letter along with degree credentials at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a consular appointment. No USCIS petition is involved.
How long does TN admission typically take for HHMI candidates?
Canadian nationals approved at a port of entry can receive TN status the same day. Mexican nationals applying through a U.S. consulate face appointment wait times that vary by location and season. USCIS notes that TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals, provided employment continues.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at HHMI?
Migrate Mate lists HHMI openings and lets you filter for roles aligned with TN-eligible professions, saving you time identifying positions worth pursuing. Cross-reference any role you find against the USMCA professions list and confirm your degree field maps directly to the job title before reaching out to HHMI's recruiting team.
How does TN visa admission work at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
