Confirm your role is USMCA-listed
TN status is only available for occupations explicitly listed in the USMCA professions annex. Veterinarians qualify directly, but roles like veterinary technician or practice manager may not. Check the O*NET profile for your target title before applying to NVA.
Request an offer letter early
NVA issues a support letter describing your role, duties, and credentials rather than filing a petition. Ask your NVA recruiter to initiate this letter before your anticipated start date so it's ready for your border or consulate appointment without delays.
Verify your credential equivalency in advance
NVA clinics operate under state veterinary licensing boards, and TN officers assess whether your foreign degree meets U.S. specialty occupation standards. Have a credential evaluation completed before your appointment so NVA's letter and your documents are consistent.
Target NVA clinics actively hiring in your specialty
NVA operates general practice, emergency, and specialty hospitals across the country. Roles in emergency medicine and surgery tend to have stronger ongoing demand. Use Migrate Mate to filter NVA postings by specialty and identify locations where TN-compatible openings are active.
Prepare for the border presentation as a Canadian national
Canadians apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry, not through a consulate. Bring your NVA offer letter, degree transcripts, professional license, and a concise cover letter explaining how your duties match the USMCA veterinarian category to the CBP officer.
Schedule your consulate appointment early if you're Mexican
Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate before entry. Appointment availability varies by location and season, so confirm NVA's intended start date and book your consular slot as soon as your offer letter is finalized to avoid schedule conflicts.
NVA TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does NVA sponsor TN visas?
Yes. NVA supports TN admission for qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing offer letters for eligible roles. TN is treaty-based admission under USMCA, so NVA doesn't file a petition with USCIS. You present the offer letter at the U.S. port of entry or consulate along with your credentials.
Which roles at NVA typically qualify for TN status?
Veterinarians are the clearest TN-eligible category at NVA because the USMCA professions list includes veterinary medicine by name. Roles in surgery, internal medicine, emergency care, and general practice fit within that category. Administrative, technician, and non-clinical roles generally don't qualify for TN under USMCA.
How do I start the TN process with NVA?
Once NVA extends a conditional offer, request that HR or your recruiter prepare a support letter documenting your title, duties, salary, and the USMCA profession your role corresponds to. You then use that letter at your CBP port-of-entry appointment or U.S. consulate interview, along with your degree and professional license.
How long does TN admission through NVA take?
For Canadians, the CBP decision at the border is typically same-day once you present a complete package. For Mexican nationals requiring a consulate appointment, total timeline depends on appointment availability at your nearest U.S. consulate. TN status is granted in three-year increments and can be renewed without a cap on renewals.
How do I find open TN-compatible roles at NVA?
Migrate Mate filters employer listings by visa type and hiring history, making it easier to identify active NVA openings suited for TN candidates. Focus your search on veterinary medicine titles across NVA's specialty and emergency network, and confirm the role description aligns with the USMCA veterinarian profession before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at NVA?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from NVA, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
