WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Design Engineer - Substation will perform substation design assignments including physical layout and protection & control systems while ensuring compliance with safety and construction standards. This role involves designing substation components, selecting materials, preparing design documents, and collaborating with engineers and field personnel to ensure project accuracy and efficiency. This position will report to a Supervising Engineer and be part of a substation design team with other engineers, designers, and drafters supporting substation projects across the QISG platform. There are four bands to this title; an employee moves up in band as they gain experience and demonstrate mastery of new skills.
- Design physical substation components, including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
- Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable lists and panel layouts.
- Develop design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct engineering calculations, including voltage drop, cable pulling, flicker analysis, and grounding analysis.
- Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
- Perform quality reviews to check for inaccuracies, omissions, or compliance issues, and provide recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications as needed.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the stakeholders.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is highly desirable; this is required for the Design Engineer 4 band.
- Curiosity for and willingness to learn about the major components of a substation is required. Basic knowledge of these components is a plus. Previous design or construction experience is highly desirable.
- No experience required in the electric utility industry for entry level positions. More experience performing detailed design for high voltage substation projects could result in a higher-level position.
- Word processing, spread sheet, and e-mail software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working in a team environment.
- Communicating effectively with co-workers.
- Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment.

Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN admission is limited to occupations explicitly listed under USMCA. Before applying to Quanta, confirm your degree and job title map to a qualifying profession like engineer, scientist, or technical specialist. A mismatch at the border or consulate can result in an immediate denial.
Target Quanta's infrastructure project teams
Quanta staffs engineers and technical professionals around active infrastructure builds, not standing corporate headcount. Time your application to project cycles by tracking their public contract announcements. Roles tied to live energy projects have a stronger business-need case for TN admission than overhead positions.
Request a role-specific offer letter
Quanta's offer letter must describe your position using USMCA profession language, not just your internal job title. Ask your hiring contact to specify the professional category, job duties, and anticipated duration. A vague letter is the most common reason TN candidates face questioning at the port of entry.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search
While TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage certification, your offered salary should be consistent with market rates for your occupation and work location. Run your role through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer so you're prepared to address compensation questions during any consular or border review.
Use Migrate Mate to identify Quanta's active TN roles
Not every Quanta opening is listed as TN-eligible by default. Migrate Mate surfaces roles at Quanta and similar energy employers that align with USMCA professions, so you can focus applications on positions where TN admission is a realistic outcome rather than an afterthought.
Prepare your O*NET occupation profile in advance
Border officers and consular staff sometimes request documentation linking your specific duties to an approved USMCA profession. Pulling your O*NET occupation profile and annotating how your Quanta role matches the listed tasks gives you a factual, government-sourced reference if your qualifications are questioned.
Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group sponsor TN visas?
Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group hires TN professionals in qualifying USMCA occupations, particularly in engineering and technical roles tied to energy infrastructure projects. TN isn't a petition-based visa, so Quanta's role is to issue a qualifying offer letter. You present that letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate to obtain TN admission.
Which roles at Quanta typically qualify for TN admission?
Engineering disciplines are the strongest fit at Quanta, including electrical, civil, and mechanical engineers working on infrastructure projects. Scientific and technical specialist roles may also qualify depending on how duties align with the USMCA professions list. Roles that don't require a specific professional degree are unlikely to meet TN eligibility regardless of the employer.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Quanta offer?
Once you have a signed offer letter from Quanta that specifies your USMCA profession, duties, and employment period, Canadians proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry with supporting credentials. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate abroad. No USCIS petition is required, which means the timeline from offer to authorization can be much shorter than H-1B visa.
How long does TN admission typically take at Quanta?
For Canadian professionals, TN admission is decided at the border, often within the same day if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals face a longer consular appointment timeline that varies by post. Quanta's offer letter processing is internal and varies by team, so confirming the letter is ready before scheduling any border or consulate appointment is essential.
How do I find TN-eligible openings at Quanta?
Quanta posts roles across its business units, but not all listings explicitly flag TN eligibility. Migrate Mate helps you identify Quanta positions that align with USMCA-qualifying occupations in the energy sector, narrowing your search to roles where your credentials and visa status are a realistic match before you invest time in a full application.
How does TN visa admission work at Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
