As a Level 2 Thermal Engineer at Shield AI, you will own the design, analysis, and integration of aircraft avionics thermal management systems and electronics cooling.
This role is best suited for an engineer who thrives on first-principles problem solving, is comfortable with ambiguous, open-ended challenges, and can communicate well across functions, ensuring well coordinated thermal management solutions.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Own thermal solutions for unmanned aerial vehicle avionics including design, analysis, and test.
- Develop and validate analytical, numerical, and computational models for heat transfer and fluid flow using hand calculations and CFD tools such as FloEFD.
- Provide technical leadership in trade studies, system architecture decisions, and risk assessments.
- Drive test planning, instrumentation, and data analysis to correlate models with experimental results.
- Guide cross-disciplinary teams in applying thermal/fluid fundamentals.
- Communicate technical findings clearly through design reviews, and written reports.
- Proactively identify risks, propose solutions, and influence electrical and/or PCBA design direction.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in avionics or electronics thermal engineering.
- Strong expertise in heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and fluid mechanics.
- Strong understanding of active and passive cooling solutions and their integration at component and system level.
- Understanding of thermal management design elements including TIMs, spreaders, heat sinks, vapor chambers, heat pipes, and fans.
- Proficiency with thermal analysis and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, FloEFD, STAR-CCM+).
- Experience with CAD design tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar.
- Demonstrated experience applying first-principles reasoning to complex engineering problems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to learn and adapt quickly to new tools, processes, and technical challenges in a fast paced, startup environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- M.S. in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with high altitude aircraft avionics cooling and thermal design.
- Familiarity with aircraft integration constraints (power, weight, volume, maintainability, safety).
- Hands-on experience with thermal and fluid system testing, instrumentation, and validation.
- Knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods relevant to thermal management.
COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $90,000 - $130,000 a year
Full-time regular employee offer package:
Pay within range listed + Bonus + Benefits + Equity
Temporary employee offer package:
Pay within range listed above + temporary benefits package (applicable after 60 days of employment)
Salary compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, licenses and certifications, and specific work location. Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility depends on whether your occupation appears on the USMCA professions list, not just your job title at Shield AI. Cross-reference your degree field and role description against the official list before applying, since mismatches at the border cause immediate denials.
Target Shield AI's engineering and AI teams
Shield AI's core hiring sits in autonomy software, systems engineering, and mission systems, which map cleanly to TN-eligible engineer and computer systems analyst categories. Focus your job search on these departments to maximize your chance of landing a TN-eligible offer.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Shield AI's offer letter must specify your job title, USMCA profession category, prearranged employer-employee relationship, and full employment terms. Canadian nationals present this directly at the port of entry, so a vague or incomplete letter creates real admission risk.
Verify your wage meets prevailing standards
Before accepting an offer, confirm your salary aligns with wage levels for your role and location using the OFLC Wage Search. Aerospace and defense roles in Shield AI's markets, including San Diego and Washington D.C., tend to carry higher prevailing wages than national averages.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified TN openings
Searching Shield AI's careers page won't tell you which roles have supported TN admissions before. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-level USMCA hiring data so you can identify which Shield AI positions have a track record of supporting TN professionals before you invest time applying.
Prepare degree equivalency documentation proactively
Shield AI hires candidates with international degrees, and CBP officers at land ports and preclearance sites will scrutinize whether your credential meets the baccalaureate requirement. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your border or consular appointment, not after an offer is signed.
Shield AI TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shield AI sponsor TN visas?
Yes, Shield AI supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-eligible occupations. The company issues offer letters that candidates present at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. There is no USCIS petition involved. Eligible roles are concentrated in engineering, software development, and applied research functions across Shield AI's defense programs.
Which roles at Shield AI typically qualify for TN status?
Roles in systems engineering, software engineering, computer systems analysis, and scientific research align most directly with TN-eligible USMCA profession categories at Shield AI. Positions in business operations, finance, or program management may not qualify depending on how the role is defined, so confirm your specific job description maps to a listed profession before applying.
How do I find Shield AI TN job openings before applying?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by visa type and employer, so you can identify Shield AI roles that have historically supported TN professionals rather than guessing from a generic job board. Once you identify target roles, review O*NET occupation profiles to confirm your credentials and duties align with the USMCA profession category your offer letter will cite.
How do I prepare for TN admission at the border when starting at Shield AI?
Canadian nationals can request TN admission directly at a land port of entry or preclearance airport without an advance visa appointment. Bring your Shield AI offer letter, proof of Canadian citizenship, and original degree credentials or transcripts. Mexican nationals must schedule a TN visa interview at a U.S. consulate before traveling. CBP or the consular officer makes the final admission decision.
How long does TN status last when working at Shield AI, and can it be renewed?
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals, so you can maintain status as long as you remain in a qualifying role at Shield AI. Renewals follow the same process as initial admission. If your role changes significantly, confirm the new position still maps to a USMCA-eligible occupation before your next renewal or border crossing.
How does TN visa admission work at Shield AI?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Shield AI, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
