Map your occupation to USMCA professions
TN admission is limited to occupations explicitly listed in the USMCA treaty. Before applying to State of Ohio, verify your role appears on that list. Use O*NET to confirm your job title aligns with a qualifying profession, especially for hybrid legal or social service positions.
Request a role-specific offer letter
State of Ohio's offer letter must name your exact USMCA occupation, not just your job title. Ask hiring managers to specify the professional category in writing. A generic letter citing only your department will likely cause delays at the port of entry or consulate.
Check prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Ohio public sector salaries are often set by state pay bands. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the prevailing wage for your occupation and county before accepting an offer, so you can confirm the role meets the wage floor expected for TN admission.
Prepare credentials for legal and social work roles
State of Ohio legal services roles frequently require bar admission, licensure, or a relevant graduate degree. Gather original transcripts, bar certificates, or professional licenses before your border appointment. Missing documents are the most common reason TN admission gets refused or deferred on the spot.
Search verified TN employer data on Migrate Mate
Finding public sector employers actively hiring TN professionals takes targeted research. Use Migrate Mate to search State of Ohio's hiring history by occupation and filter for roles aligned with your USMCA profession, so you're applying where TN admission has a documented track record.
Understand Canadian versus Mexican TN pathways
Canadian nationals present their offer letter and credentials directly at a U.S. port of entry without scheduling a consular interview. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate abroad. State of Ohio's onboarding timelines differ for each pathway, so confirm your start date accommodates the correct route.
State of Ohio TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does State of Ohio sponsor TN visas?
State of Ohio supports TN admission for qualifying Canadian and Mexican professionals by issuing offer letters for eligible roles. There is no USCIS petition involved. The worker presents the offer letter at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. Roles must align with an occupation listed on the USMCA professions list, which limits eligibility primarily to credentialed legal, social science, and related professionals.
Which roles at State of Ohio typically qualify for TN admission?
State of Ohio's legal services offices most commonly support TN admission for attorneys, social workers, and certain scientific or technical professionals whose credentials match a USMCA-listed occupation. Administrative or general government roles that don't require a specific qualifying degree typically won't meet TN eligibility standards, regardless of the employer.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from State of Ohio?
Once State of Ohio issues a formal offer letter specifying your USMCA occupation, Canadian nationals can proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry with supporting credentials. Mexican nationals schedule a consular interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Gather transcripts, licenses, and your offer letter well in advance of your intended start date.
How long does TN admission take when working with State of Ohio?
Canadian nationals who apply at a port of entry can receive TN admission the same day if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals face consular appointment wait times that vary by location and season. State of Ohio's internal hiring timelines also factor in, so align your expected start date with both your consular availability and the agency's onboarding schedule.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at State of Ohio?
Migrate Mate lets you search State of Ohio's hiring history filtered by visa type and occupation, so you can identify which departments and roles have supported TN professionals. Cross-reference any open position against the USMCA professions list and confirm with the hiring team that the role's duties align with a qualifying occupation before investing time in the application process.
How does TN visa admission work at State of Ohio?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from State of Ohio, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
