Match your credential to USMCA professions
TN admission requires your role to appear on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your target position at State of Washington against O*NET to confirm the occupation classification aligns, environmental scientist, engineer, and accountant are common fits here.
Target science and environmental agency roles
State of Washington's Department of Ecology, Department of Health, and Department of Transportation regularly hire professionals in TN-eligible fields. Prioritize postings that explicitly require a relevant bachelor's or higher, since the degree requirement is mandatory for TN admission.
Request a detailed TN support letter early
Once you receive a job offer, ask HR to include your job title, USMCA profession category, anticipated start date, and employment duration in the offer letter. A vague or incomplete letter is the most common reason Canadians are turned away at the port of entry.
Canadians: prepare your border entry documents thoroughly
As a Canadian, you apply for TN admission directly at a U.S. port of entry, no consulate appointment needed. Bring your State of Washington offer letter, degree transcripts or diploma, and proof of Canadian citizenship. Customs officers can and do ask detailed questions about your role.
Verify prevailing wage compliance before negotiating salary
State government employers must still meet wage standards tied to your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your role in Washington State before you negotiate, so your offer isn't structured below the threshold that could flag issues.

State of Washington TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does State of Washington sponsor TN visas?
Yes. State of Washington supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican professionals hired into roles that qualify under the USMCA professions list. It doesn't file a petition, instead, it issues an offer letter that you present at the border or U.S. consulate. Eligible roles are concentrated in environmental science, engineering, public health, and related technical fields across its agencies.
Which departments at State of Washington typically hire TN professionals?
The Department of Ecology, Department of Health, and Department of Transportation are among the most active hiring units for TN-eligible occupations. These agencies routinely need environmental scientists, civil engineers, biologists, and public health professionals, all occupations that appear on the USMCA professions list. Technical and regulatory roles in policy divisions are also common entry points.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from State of Washington?
After accepting an offer, ask State of Washington HR to issue a TN support letter specifying your job title, the USMCA profession category, your degree requirement, start date, and employment term. Canadians then present this letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a TN visa appointment at a U.S. consulate and submit the same documentation.

For Canadian nationals, TN admission at the border typically takes a few hours if documentation is complete, there's no waiting period or USCIS processing queue. Mexican nationals face consular appointment wait times that vary by location and time of year. TN status is granted for up to three years initially and can be renewed without a statutory limit, which makes it well-suited for state government employment.
How do I find open TN roles at State of Washington?
Use Migrate Mate to search State of Washington job postings filtered for TN-compatible positions. Focus on roles where the job description requires a specific degree in a relevant field, since that degree requirement is what ties the position to a USMCA profession category. Postings that list 'preferred' rather than 'required' credentials can create issues at the border.

TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from State of Washington, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
