Frame your CV around research output
Designated sponsors issuing DS-2019 forms for Research Scholar placements expect documented contributions: published papers, conference proceedings, or open-source model work. A CV that lists job duties without scholarly output rarely satisfies program eligibility reviewers.
Confirm your role qualifies as specialty occupation
AI job titles vary widely. Use O*NET to verify that the specific duties in your offer letter match an occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Vague titles like 'AI generalist' create eligibility problems during DS-2019 issuance.
Search Migrate Mate to find receptive host employers
Not every company that hires AI professionals has experience hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Migrate Mate filters roles by sponsorship history so you target employers already familiar with the DS-2019 process and host responsibilities.
Ask whether the 2-year home residency requirement applies
AI researchers funded by a home government or an international organization, or placed in a field on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, may be subject to the 2-year home residency requirement. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting any offer.
Get the training plan signed before your start date
For Intern and Trainee categories, USCIS and your designated sponsor both require a completed Form DS-7002 training plan before the DS-2019 is issued. AI host employers unfamiliar with J-1 often underestimate this step, which can delay your program start by weeks.
Verify the host employer's SEVIS compliance standing
Before accepting an offer, ask whether the host employer has an active agreement with a State Department-designated sponsor organization. Employers without an existing relationship must establish one, which adds time to your onboarding timeline.
AI J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an AI role?
It depends on your career stage. Current students pursuing AI internships typically use the Intern category. Early-career professionals developing AI skills in a structured program use the Trainee category. Academics and postdoctoral researchers conducting AI research at U.S. institutions use the Research Scholar or Short-Term Scholar category. Each category has different eligibility requirements and maximum program durations.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an AI position?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, or Cultural Vistas, not the employer where you work. That employer is called the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors your program compliance, and serves as the official program administrator throughout your exchange.
How do I find AI employers that are set up for J-1 hosting?
Most AI job postings don't advertise J-1 compatibility. Migrate Mate surfaces U.S. employers with active sponsorship history, making it easier to identify host organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process and the training plan requirements specific to technical roles like AI engineering or machine learning research.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement affect AI researchers?
It can. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government or a recognized international organization, or if your home country lists AI-related occupations on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, the 2-year home residency requirement may apply. This means you'd need to return home for two years before changing to certain other U.S. visa categories. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor early.
What documents does an AI host employer need to provide for J-1 sponsorship?
For Intern and Trainee categories, the host employer must complete and sign a Form DS-7002 training plan detailing the AI skills, learning objectives, and supervision structure for your placement. For Research Scholar placements, the host institution typically provides an official invitation letter, a program description, and evidence of the research project's scope. The designated sponsor reviews all of these before issuing your DS-2019.
