Align your credentials with CTR standards
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) eligibility from the National Cancer Registrars Association signals baseline competency to U.S. host employers. Document your cancer data coding experience using NAACCR and SEER standards, as these are the formats American registries run on.
Target hospital systems with active research programs
Academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers are the host employers most likely to have existing relationships with J-1 designated sponsors. These institutions regularly host exchange visitors in health informatics and cancer surveillance roles, making sponsor coordination far less unfamiliar to their HR teams.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Cancer Registrar and health informatics positions at employers with a demonstrated history of supporting exchange visitors. This narrows your search to host organizations where J-1 program logistics are already understood internally.
Clarify your J-1 category before outreach
If you've been working as a registrar for fewer than five years post-graduation, you'll likely qualify under the Trainee category. Beyond that threshold, the Research Scholar or Specialist category may apply. Getting this wrong early delays DS-2019 issuance and can stall your entire timeline.
Confirm the host employer will sign a training plan
Your designated sponsor requires a signed Training Plan (Form DS-7002) from the host organization before issuing a DS-2019. Many smaller hospitals don't realize this is their administrative responsibility, so raise it explicitly during the offer stage before assuming the paperwork will happen automatically.
Check for the two-year home residency requirement early
Some Cancer Registrar exchange visitors, particularly those funded by government grants or coming from countries on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, are subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm your status before accepting an offer if you plan to stay in the U.S. long-term.

Find Cancer Registrar JobsCancer Registrar J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Cancer Registrar roles?
Most Cancer Registrar exchange visitors enter under the Trainee category if they have fewer than five years of post-degree professional experience. Professionals with more extensive backgrounds, or those engaged in cancer surveillance research, may qualify under the Research Scholar or Specialist category. Your designated sponsor organization determines the appropriate category and issues the DS-2019 accordingly.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if a hospital wants to hire me?
The hospital is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. J-1 sponsorship comes from a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE. That organization reviews your qualifications, works with the host employer to complete required documentation, and issues the DS-2019 certificate that makes your visa application possible.
How do I find Cancer Registrar positions where employers are already familiar with J-1 hosting?
Migrate Mate lets you search Cancer Registrar and health informatics roles at employers with a history of supporting exchange visitors. Targeting these organizations saves significant time because their HR and legal teams already understand the host responsibilities, training plan requirements, and coordination steps that J-1 placement involves.
Does holding a Certified Tumor Registrar credential help with J-1 placement?
CTR certification from the National Cancer Registrars Association strengthens your profile with U.S. host employers because it demonstrates familiarity with NAACCR coding standards and SEER data systems used across American cancer registries. It does not directly affect J-1 eligibility, which is determined by your designated sponsor, but it significantly improves your chances of a host employer agreeing to the placement.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect my Cancer Registrar J-1 visa?
Yes, if your exchange program is funded by your home government, by the U.S. government, or if your home country appears on the DOS Exchange Visitor Skills List in a category that includes health information or medical sciences, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This means you'd need to return home for two years, or obtain a waiver, before changing to an H-1B or applying for a green card.
