Our Values:
We credit much of our success to our exceptional team. We’re looking for mission-driven builders who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, and embody our four core values:
Care first: We do whatever it takes for our students to succeed.
Learn quickly: We test, learn with data, and iterate.
Build together: We win when we rely on each other.
Own it: We show up, take initiative, and show pride.
The Opportunity:
As an Engineering Manager at Stepful, you’ll lead a team of Product Engineers building the end-to-end experiences that help our students succeed—from enrollment and program completion to landing their first healthcare job. This is a hands-on management role where you will stay close to the codebase (roughly 20% of your time) while shaping what we build and leading engineers to do the best work of their careers.
What You’ll Do:
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead your team to deliver impactful outcomes at a sustainable pace—removing blockers, improving processes, and driving continuous improvement.
- Develop engineers through regular feedback, personalized development plans, and opportunity matching.
- Foster a high-trust, psychologically safe team culture grounded in Stepful’s mission and values.
- Recruit, interview, and onboard new engineers to scale our builder culture.
Product Delivery & Collaboration:
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations to shape discovery and ensure we are building the right things at the right time.
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders, setting expectations upfront and following through on delivery commitments.
- Balance competing priorities with a bias for action and clear decision-making.
Technical Excellence (Hands-on):
- Contribute roughly 20% of your time to the codebase through code reviews, architecture design, documentation, and individual contributions.
- Uphold high engineering quality and guide system evolution through technical roadmapping and leading by example.
- Oversee projects across our core pillars: Learning Experience (adaptive learning/AI feedback), Careers (ranking algorithms and partner matching), and Human Connection (LLM-driven internal tools).
What You’ll Bring:
- 2+ years of direct experience managing software engineers.
- 6+ years of experience building software products, with a strong full-stack engineering background.
- A "builder" mentality—you are eager to go deep in code reviews, ask technical questions, and stay involved in architecture.
- Proven experience partnering with Product and Design teams through the full discovery, planning, and execution lifecycle.
- A genuine love for developing others and seeing engineers grow in their careers.
Bonus Points If:
- You have experience at a high-growth startup (B2C, B2B2C, EdTech, or HealthTech).
- You have a track record of improving engineering systems (CI/CD, developer experience, velocity).
- You have experience building and maintaining happy, high-performing engineering teams during periods of rapid scale.
Benefits And Compensation:
- Subsidized Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance plan options
- 401(k)
- FSA, HSA and commuter benefits
- Open vacation policy, including:
+ Guidance of 15 days PTO annually
+ Stepful closed the last week of December

New Hire Base Salary Bands:
Engineering Manager - $172,000-$218,000
Senior Manager - $188,000-$238,000
Please note we do not have a bonus structure at this time so all cash compensation will come in the form of base salary. The total compensation package will also include our benefits package and an equity (ISOs) package. Compensation for this role will fall within the pay range listed and will be determined based on job-related factors including, but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications as well as interview evaluation. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Product Engineering Manager
Align your training plan to engineering management
Your DS-2019 requires a structured training plan that maps your product engineering management activities to measurable objectives. Document specific competencies you'll develop, such as agile methodology, cross-functional team leadership, and product lifecycle oversight, before approaching a designated sponsor.
Distinguish Trainee from Specialist category eligibility
The Trainee category suits candidates within five years of graduation or last employment. If you have more than five years of specialized product engineering management experience, the Specialist category is the correct fit. Confirm which applies before a host employer begins DS-2019 paperwork.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-compatible host employers
Filter your employer search on Migrate Mate to surface U.S. companies that have hosted international professionals in engineering management roles, giving you a practical starting point before cold-targeting organizations unfamiliar with J-1 host obligations.
Verify the host employer accepts J-1 training agreements
Many engineering employers confuse J-1 host obligations with H-1B sponsorship. Confirm the company is willing to execute a formal training plan agreement with your designated sponsor and designate an internal supervisor before accepting any offer.
Check the two-year home residency requirement early
Product Engineering Manager roles in certain government-funded research or technology transfer contexts can trigger the J-1 two-year home-country residency requirement. Determine whether your specific program and funding source activate this requirement before signing an offer letter.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation alignment
O*NET defines the core tasks, skills, and knowledge requirements for engineering managers. Use that profile to demonstrate that your role meets the Specialist or Trainee program's requirement for specialized knowledge, strengthening your training plan and DS-2019 application.

Find Product Engineering Manager JobsProduct Engineering Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Product Engineering Manager role?
Most Product Engineering Manager candidates qualify under the Trainee category if they are within five years of their degree or last relevant employment, or the Specialist category if they have extensive specialized experience. Both require a structured training plan approved by a State Department-designated sponsor such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT. The category determines your maximum program duration and eligibility rules.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role, the employer or a separate organization?
The J-1 visa sponsor is always a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. The engineering company hosting you is the host employer. These are two separate entities with separate responsibilities under the J-1 framework.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Product Engineering Manager?
Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. companies and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship pathways, helping you identify host employers in product and engineering before you approach a designated sponsor. Target mid-size to large technology and manufacturing firms, as they are more likely to have existing relationships with J-1 designated sponsors and internal processes for executing training plan agreements.
Does the J-1 visa for a Product Engineering Manager have a cap or lottery?
No. The J-1 exchange visitor visa has no annual numerical cap and no lottery selection process. You can apply and begin your program at any time of year, provided your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 and the consulate or USCIS approves your application. This distinguishes it significantly from the H-1B, which has a 65,000 regular-cap lottery each spring.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect a Product Engineering Manager on J-1?
Yes, in certain situations. If your training program is funded in whole or in part by a government entity, or if your home country has designated your field as a skills-shortage area, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This would require you to return home for two years before changing to most other nonimmigrant statuses or applying for permanent residence. Confirm your funding source and home-country designation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
