Orthoptist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a orthoptist in Texas?
To work as an orthoptist in Texas, you must hold certification from the American Orthoptic Council, which requires completing an accredited two-year orthoptic training program and passing both written and practical examinations. Texas does not issue a separate state license for orthoptists, so the American Orthoptic Council credential is the recognized standard for employment at Texas hospital systems and academic medical centers. Most programs leading to certification are affiliated with teaching hospitals.
How much do orthoptists make in Texas?
Orthoptists in Texas earn a median of about $105,370 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,170 for the lowest 10% to over $259,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire orthoptists in Texas?
Employers hiring orthoptists in Texas right now include Hanger, Ascension, and UT Southwestern Medical Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas hiring is concentrated within large academic health systems and pediatric specialty centers, which maintain dedicated orthoptics departments rather than using contract staffing.
Which Texas cities have the most orthoptist jobs?
Corpus Christi, Dallas, and Houston have the most orthoptist openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense concentration of academic medical centers and children's hospitals, Dallas draws volume from UT Southwestern and its affiliated network of outpatient ophthalmology clinics, and San Antonio's military medical infrastructure and university health system create consistent specialist demand in a smaller but stable market.
Are there remote orthoptist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Orthoptics is fundamentally a hands-on clinical role requiring in-person patient assessment, so remote work is the exception rather than the norm. About 0% of orthoptist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve telehealth triage, case review, or administrative coordination rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a orthoptist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to an accredited orthoptic training program affiliated with a Texas teaching hospital, such as those connected to UT Southwestern or Texas Children's Hospital, since the two-year supervised residency built into certification training is itself the structured entry point. Candidates with backgrounds as ophthalmic technicians or ophthalmic medical personnel can leverage that clinical experience to strengthen applications. Completing the American Orthoptic Council certification examination and any available pediatric ophthalmology rotations gives new entrants a meaningful edge in Texas hiring.
Where can I find and apply to orthoptist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to orthoptist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across hospital systems, pediatric specialty centers, and outpatient ophthalmology practices. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly through each listing.
