Job Description Summary:
The Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management will provide positive leadership and management for the overall Risk Management Program for Spira Care. This position manages the activities of Spira Care’s risk management, and patient safety programs, and provides guidance to the leadership team and clinical staff. The Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management develops and maintains systems within Spira Care to detect, monitor, prevent, organize, measure, investigate, report, and manage patient adverse events, malpractice claims, incident reports, and other indicators of potential patient harm. The Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management supports organizational efforts to mitigate and reduce risk across Spira Care and each of its Care Centers.The Spira Care Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management will be responsible for the day to day operations of incident reporting platform, including management of reporting solution and related documents designed to ensure oversight of risk management activities, management of risk decision-making, review and assessment of risk management reports. The Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management will be responsible for facilitating risk assessments, maintaining and updating records, and generating reports to support the Spira Care’s risk profile and enterprise risks that may impact the organization. The Manager of Patient Safety & Risk Management will also collaborate with legal and operations functions to implement and maintain insurance coverage, including Professional Liability coverage. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Risk Management. This role will operate with minimal direction and may provide guidance and oversight to an ERM analyst role.
Job Description:
- In partnership with leaders, conducts thorough internal reviews to effectively respond to patient grievances/complaints, safety concerns, high risk incidents, and compliance issues to mitigate potential risks associated with both systems and individuals.
- Implements, deploys and manages Spira Care’s incident reporting platform; partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure successful launch.
- Promotes the incident and events reporting processes by educating the Spira Care Centers about reporting methods and strategies and facilitating stakeholder understanding and usage of reporting mechanisms.
- Proactively evaluates areas of organizational risk based on Spira Care’s internal assessments and external benchmarking, and implements strategies and policies that promote patient, visitor, and staff safety.
- Develops trending and reporting tools to identify opportunities for organizational improvement and facilitates the development and implementation of prevention initiatives.
- Directs the investigation of all potentially compensable events (preventable adverse events).
- Establishes a process for receiving, documenting, and tracking evaluative data on all program audits, evaluations, internal investigations, complaints and risk analyses and provides trend data to inform KPI efforts.
- Establishes and periodically (at least annually) updates Spira Care’s Risk Management Plan.
- Meets regularly with leadership to provide detailed reports on all serious incidents, claims, and risk-related issues.
- Responds to sentinel events and other serious occurrences and provide expert advice on the management and reporting of such events to administrative and clinical leadership and staff.
- Conducts immediate/appropriate response to any serious occurrence/complaint representing actual or potential patient, visitor, or staff injury. Monitors and take subsequent actions to ensure learning, compliance, and documentation.
- Analyzes all statistical reports and advisories that identify risk management and patient safety patterns and trends for leadership.
- At the direction of the Director of Enterprise Risk Management, serves as liaison to external regulatory agencies for purposes of patient and physician reporting, event investigation, and response.
- Works with legal counsel when necessary to coordinate information needed to manage claims; records, collects, documents, maintains, and provides legal counsel any requested information and documents necessary while maintaining privilege.
- Works with legal and operation functions to ensure adequate insurance coverage including professional liability and other applicable lines of coverage.
- Reviews and evaluates related policies and procedures and recommend revisions as needed. Create new policies for approval, as needed.
- Participates in educational and communication initiatives to promote risks reduction and compliance policies and procedures.
- Annually evaluates risk management and patient safety program for improvement opportunities.
- Initiates partnerships with colleagues across Spira Care to help drive a culture of risk awareness and proactive risk identification.
Minimum Qualifications
- Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant Degree
- CPHRM- Certified Professional in Healthcare Management or CPPS- Certified Professional in Patient Safety required within a year of hire
- 5-7 years’ experience in ERM, compliance, audit, risk management or similar function in a health care environment required
- Experience in planning and implementation of risk management strategies and programs.
- Knowledge of and experience with laws, regulations and industry guidance that affect healthcare risk management and patient safety, including OSHA, HIPAA, and provider licensure laws, and state and federal provider reporting requirements.
- Experience in emergency planning is a plus.
- High-energy, organized, persistent, and creative individual with strong communications, interpersonal, and systems thinking skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records Software required; AthenaNet experience preferred.
