How do you become a research data scientist in Maine?
Most research data scientist roles in Maine require at least a master's degree in data science, statistics, biostatistics, or a closely related field, and many positions at research institutions prefer a doctorate. Maine has no state-issued license specific to this role. The practical path involves building a research portfolio, gaining experience with scientific computing, and targeting Maine's dominant research employers in healthcare, marine science, and higher education.
How much do research data scientists make in Maine?
Research data scientists in Maine earn a median of about $90,880 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,280 for the lowest 10% to over $138,530 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research data scientists in Maine?

Maine's biomedical and academic research sectors, anchored by institutions in Portland and Orono, drive much of the consistent demand for this role.
Which Maine cities have the most research data scientist jobs?
Orono, Bar Harbor, and Scarborough account for the largest share of research data scientist openings in Maine. Portland's concentration of healthcare systems and growing tech sector drives the bulk of postings, while Orono and Bangor reflect demand from the University of Maine and affiliated research programs, and Bar Harbor contributes openings tied to Jackson Laboratory's genomics and computational biology work.

About 44% of research data scientist openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed the talent pool for this role has become. Positions focused on data pipeline work and statistical modeling tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while roles requiring lab collaboration or on-site research coordination are more likely to be in-person.
How can I get hired as a research data scientist in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a graduate research assistantship or a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maine, which regularly places people into research data roles at Maine institutions. Candidates without advanced degrees can target data analyst or junior bioinformatics positions at MaineHealth or Jackson Laboratory, where demonstrated portfolio work in Python or R and familiarity with scientific datasets often carries more weight than years of direct experience. Completing a published or presented research project, even from coursework, significantly strengthens an application.
