Accountant roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA for Canadian and Mexican citizens with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Unlike H-1B visa, there's no lottery for Canadians, and TN status can be renewed indefinitely in two-year increments as long as you hold a valid job offer.

Verify your credential meets TN requirements
TN visa status for accountants requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in accounting or a related field. A CPA license alone won't satisfy the educational requirement if you lack the underlying degree, so confirm your transcript is ready before applying.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Firms with recent visa filings demonstrate experience navigating work visa sponsorship requirements. Targeting these employers means they're already comfortable with visa sponsorship processes and support letter preparation, cutting down on the internal legal review time you'd face with a first-time sponsor.
Distinguish TN from H-1B when briefing hiring teams
TN requires no USCIS petition filing for Canadians entering at the border, which means your employer avoids the I-129 process entirely. Framing this distinction clearly during negotiations removes one of the most common employer objections to sponsorship.
Prepare a Canadian CBSA border presentation package
Canadian accountants can obtain TN status directly at a port of entry without scheduling a consulate appointment. Bring your offer letter, degree credentials, and a brief employer support letter describing the specific accounting duties and your qualifications.
Search for sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find accountant roles at employers with recent visa filings who understand work visa sponsorship. Filtering by visa type surfaces job openings at firms experienced with the visa process, saving you from cold-educating recruiters on TN eligibility requirements.
Address Mexican TN allocation limits early in negotiations
Mexico nationals face a separate TN allocation under USMCA, so confirm your employer's counsel has filed for a Mexican TN before rather than assuming the process mirrors the Canadian route. Early disclosure prevents late-stage surprises during offer finalization.
Accountant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an accounting role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Accountant is a designated USMCA profession eligible for TN status. Your job duties must correspond to the accounting occupation as defined under the treaty, and you must hold a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in accounting or a closely related field. Roles that blend accounting with general business management duties may face additional scrutiny at the border or consulate.
How does TN compare to H-1B for accountants?
TN is significantly more practical for accountants than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition required if you're Canadian entering at a land port of entry. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a competitive lottery and a multi-month USCIS adjudication process. TN can be obtained in a single day for Canadians if your documents are in order.
How can I find accountant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter by occupation category to surface accountant positions at employers already familiar with the TN process, avoiding the time spent educating firms that have never sponsored a TN professional.
Can I switch accounting employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to a specific employer and a specific position. Changing employers requires obtaining a new TN authorization, either at a port of entry for Canadians or through a new DS-160 and consulate appointment for Mexican nationals. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way some other statuses allow.
Does my CPA certification help with the TN application for accountants?
A CPA license strengthens your application by demonstrating professional standing, but it doesn't substitute for the degree requirement. USMCA requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in accounting or a related field. Border officers and consular officers evaluate both credentials together, so having both makes for a more straightforward review of your qualifications.
