Verify your degree meets CPA equivalency
TN visa approval for accountants depends on your degree being in accounting or a closely related field. A general business degree with accounting coursework often draws scrutiny at the border, so gather transcripts and a credential evaluation before applying.
Target employers with dedicated finance functions
Mid-size and large companies with in-house corporate accounting teams are far more likely to sponsor TN status than staffing agencies or consulting firms, which often cannot serve as the qualifying U.S. employer under USMCA rules.
Search TN-specific job listings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Senior Corporate Accountant roles by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you're only seeing employers who already understand the process and are actively open to hiring Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Clarify port-of-entry versus consular processing early
Canadian citizens can obtain TN status directly at a U.S. land border or airport with a job offer letter and supporting documents. Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate. Confirm which route your employer expects before accepting an offer.
Draft a precise support letter before the offer stage
Your employer's support letter must specify your accounting duties, the business need for the role, your proposed start date, and your Canadian or Mexican citizenship. Vague letters citing general finance responsibilities are a common cause of TN refusals.
Align your job title with USMCA occupation language
USCIS and CBP officers compare your actual duties to the USMCA Accountant category definition. If your employer's internal title is 'Finance Manager' or 'Controller,' confirm the offer letter frames your duties as accounting work, not general management.
Senior Corporate Accountant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Corporate Accountant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided your duties center on accounting work and your degree is in accounting or a directly related field. The USMCA Accountant category covers roles involving financial reporting, consolidations, and general ledger management. Roles where accounting is secondary to management responsibilities can face CBP scrutiny, so your offer letter must clearly describe your core accounting functions.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for this role?
TN is significantly more practical for Senior Corporate Accountant positions. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and processing for Canadians happens at the port of entry with immediate approval potential. H-1B requires your employer to file a petition and wait for USCIS adjudication, making TN the faster and lower-cost path for qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals. For Canadians, you present your credentials and employer support letter directly at the border; for Mexicans, the process occurs at a U.S. consulate. Either way, TN avoids the extended timeline and fees associated with H-1B processing.
What documents do I need to bring to the border for TN admission?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a detailed employer support letter, proof of your accounting degree, and any professional credentials such as a CPA designation. The support letter should confirm your job title, duties, start date, and that you are a Canadian citizen. CBP officers may also request your transcripts if your degree title is not clearly accounting-specific.
Where can I find Senior Corporate Accountant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through general postings where sponsorship policies are unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces Senior Corporate Accountant listings from employers who are already open to TN candidates, which saves significant time during your search.
Can I switch employers after entering the U.S. on a TN visa as an accountant?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your original employer. Before starting with a new company, your new employer must establish separate TN authorization, either through a new port-of-entry admission for Canadian citizens or a new consular appointment for Mexican citizens. Working for a new employer before that authorization is in place puts your status at risk, so time the transition carefully with both employers.
