TN Visa Automation Jobs
Automation roles in manufacturing, process engineering, and systems integration qualify for TN visa sponsorship under the USMCA as Computer Systems Analyst or Industrial Engineer occupations. Canadian citizens can cross with TN status the same day a U.S. employer extends an offer, with no lottery and no cap standing between you and the role.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Automation
Match your credentials to qualifying TN categories
Automation roles don't map to a single TN visa category. A controls engineer typically qualifies under Industrial Engineer, while an automation systems developer may qualify under Computer Systems Analyst. Confirm which category your degree and job duties support before applying.
Target manufacturers with active automation investment
Companies expanding robotics, PLC programming, or SCADA systems are actively hiring and more likely to support TN sponsorship without long approval chains. Look for employers with recent visa filings in engineering occupations—a sign they have experience navigating work visa sponsorship processes.
Ask employers for a detailed support letter early
Your TN support letter must describe your specific automation duties, the qualifying TN category, your degree, and your anticipated employment period. Request this before your border or consulate appointment so CBP or the consular officer can assess your case without ambiguity.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsorship-ready automation employers
Migrate Mate filters automation job listings by TN visa sponsorship history so you're not cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the process. Start your search there and focus your outreach on companies that have successfully sponsored roles in engineering and systems integration.
Prepare credential evaluations for non-U.S. degrees upfront
Mexican nationals with a Mexican engineering degree should obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator before filing. CBP officers and consular posts vary in familiarity with foreign credentials, and a formal equivalency evaluation removes a common point of delay at the application stage.
Negotiate TN renewal terms before accepting an offer
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with unlimited renewals, but each renewal requires employer re-involvement. Confirm your employer understands they must support future renewals and that your role description won't shift into duties outside your original qualifying TN category.
Automation TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which TN visa category covers automation engineer roles?
Automation engineers most commonly qualify under the Industrial Engineer or Computer Systems Analyst TN categories, depending on job duties. A role focused on robotic systems design, PLC programming, or process optimization generally falls under Industrial Engineer. Roles centered on software-driven automation, SCADA architecture, or systems integration typically qualify under Computer Systems Analyst. Your degree field and specific job duties, not your job title alone, determine the correct category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for automation professionals?
TN visa sponsorship for automation roles is significantly faster and more predictable than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no employer petition to USCIS for Canadian citizens, and no multi-month wait. Canadian nationals can receive TN status at the border or a port of entry the same day. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate and typically receive a decision within weeks. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, employer filing fees, and a wait of several months before work can begin.
Can I switch automation employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot start working for a new employer until your new TN status is approved. Changing employers requires a fresh TN application tied to the new job offer. Canadian citizens can apply at the border with the new employer's support letter. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate. There is no grace period equivalent to the H-1B 60-day rule, so timing the transition carefully with your employer is essential.
Where can I find automation jobs that already support TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. Instead of sorting through general job boards where sponsorship willingness is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces automation roles at employers with verified sponsorship history, so you spend less time on outreach that goes nowhere and more time on opportunities that match your status.
Does my automation role need to qualify as a specialty occupation for TN?
The specialty occupation standard applies to H-1B, not TN. TN automation roles must meet the requirements of the specific USMCA occupational category you claim, primarily that your bachelor's degree or higher is in a field directly related to the duties you'll perform. A general business degree won't support an Industrial Engineer TN application even if you've been working in automation for years.
