Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Automation Engineer
Verify your degree maps to engineering
TN visa status requires a degree in engineering, not just a related field. A computer science or physics degree may not satisfy the engineer category for automation roles. Confirm your credential aligns before applying.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated early
Mexican and Canadian degrees issued in Spanish or French need evaluation by a NACES-member agency before most employers will initiate TN paperwork. Start this three to four weeks before any expected offer.
Target manufacturers experienced with visa sponsorship
Automotive, semiconductor, and food processing plants routinely hire TN-eligible engineers because automation is core to their operations, not a one-off hire. Filter your search by industry, not just job title, to find employers with recent visa filings who understand the support letter process and can guide you through border crossing or consulate presentation requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with recent visa filings who regularly sponsor work visas for engineering roles. Targeting employers experienced with visa sponsorship streamlines your search and helps you avoid companies unfamiliar with the TN process.
Draft a support letter that names your automation scope
CBP officers review the employer support letter at the port of entry for Canadians. Generic letters citing 'engineering duties' get more scrutiny than letters specifying PLC systems, SCADA integration, or robotics programming within a defined project.
Confirm your role title matches USMCA engineer language
Job offers titled 'Automation Specialist' or 'Controls Technician' can complicate TN approval even when the duties qualify. Ask the employer to align the offer letter title with a recognized engineering designation before filing.
Automation Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automation Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Automation Engineer roles generally qualify under the USMCA engineer category, provided your degree is in engineering and your duties involve engineering-level work such as control systems design, PLC programming, or process automation. Technician-level roles with the same title but without an engineering degree requirement typically do not qualify. The employer's offer letter must reflect engineering responsibilities clearly.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Automation Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so an employer can sponsor you year-round with no random selection risk. H-1B visa requires entering a lottery with a roughly 25 to 30 percent selection rate. TN is also faster to obtain, Canadians can be approved at the port of entry the same day, while H-1B processing takes months. The tradeoff is that TN does not directly lead to a green card the way H-1B does.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer provides a support letter on company letterhead specifying your job title, a description of automation duties, your start date, and confirmation that a bachelor's degree in engineering is required. They do not file a petition with USCIS for Canadian applicants. Mexican citizens require a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate, which means the employer's documentation must also support a DS-160 application and consular interview.
Can I switch Automation Engineer jobs while on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. When you change employers, you need a new TN approval before starting with the new company. Canadians can obtain this at a port of entry with a new support letter from the incoming employer. Mexican citizens need to return to a consulate for a new visa stamp. Working even one day for a new employer before the new TN is approved puts you out of status.
Where can I find Automation Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for TN-eligible roles. You can filter for Automation Engineer positions where the employer has confirmed TN sponsorship capacity, which avoids the common frustration of finding a strong match only to learn the company does not sponsor work visas. Employers on Migrate Mate understand the TN process, including what goes into the support letter and the port-of-entry workflow for Canadians.
