Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Traffic Engineer
Verify your degree meets engineering requirements
TN status requires a degree in engineering or a directly related field. A civil or transportation engineering degree is the cleanest fit. Degrees in urban planning or applied science may require additional documentation to establish the connection to traffic engineering work.
Target infrastructure and transportation planning firms
Engineering consultancies contracted by state DOTs and municipalities hire traffic engineers regularly and have experience with work visa sponsorship. These employers understand the TN visa process and are more likely to move quickly once you have a qualifying offer.
Confirm the job title aligns with USMCA engineering categories
Your offer letter must describe duties that qualify under the Engineering occupation category. Titles like Traffic Operations Analyst or Transportation Planner can work, but the duties described must be grounded in engineering analysis, not general project coordination.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with recent visa filings
Search Migrate Mate to identify traffic engineering employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Targeting firms familiar with visa sponsorship processes means working with employers who understand the documentation and procedures required for international hiring.
Prepare a support letter that maps credentials to the role
CBP officers at the port of entry review your employer's support letter carefully. It should explicitly connect your engineering degree and experience to the specific traffic engineering duties in the offer, not just restate your job title.
Understand that Mexicans must complete consular processing in advance
Unlike Canadians who can obtain TN status at the border, Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview at a U.S. embassy. Build at least four to eight weeks into your timeline after receiving a job offer to account for appointment availability.

Find Traffic Engineer JobsTraffic Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Traffic Engineer role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Traffic Engineering falls under the USMCA Engineering occupation category, which covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or an equivalent field. Your offer letter must describe duties grounded in engineering analysis, such as traffic flow modeling, signal timing, or safety studies, not general project management.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Traffic Engineers?
The TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so there's no waiting period or selection uncertainty. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with limited slots each fiscal year. For Traffic Engineers with a qualifying degree and a job offer, the TN is a faster and more predictable path, though it does not lead directly to permanent residence the way an H-1B can.
Where can I find Traffic Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles in the United States. You can search for Traffic Engineer positions with employers who have active sponsorship history, which removes the friction of approaching firms unfamiliar with TN requirements.
What documents does a Canadian Traffic Engineer need at the port of entry?
You need a valid Canadian passport, an employer support letter describing your engineering duties and confirming TN eligibility, and proof of your engineering degree. CBP reviews these documents at the port of entry and can approve TN status the same day for clean applications.
Can a Traffic Engineer on TN status change employers?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. You cannot begin work for a new employer under your existing TN. Canadians can get a new TN approved at the port of entry when starting with a new employer. Mexicans need to return to a U.S. consulate for a new visa. Plan the transition carefully to avoid a gap in authorized employment.
