Match your degree to the engineer category
TN visa status requires a degree in engineering, not facilities management or a related field. If your diploma reads 'Mechanical Engineering' or 'Civil Engineering,' you're well-positioned. A facilities management degree alone won't satisfy CBP without supplemental engineering credentials.
Request a support letter covering job duties
Your employer's support letter must describe your role in engineering terms, not operational or administrative ones. Phrases like 'designing HVAC systems' or 'evaluating structural load capacity' carry more weight with CBP than 'overseeing building maintenance contracts.'
Target employers with capital project pipelines
Facilities Engineer roles at manufacturers, hospitals, universities, and commercial real estate firms involve ongoing engineering work that sustains TN eligibility. Employers with active construction or systems upgrade projects are most likely to offer sponsorship and understand the visa category.
Clarify TN renewal expectations before signing
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals for Canadians. Before accepting an offer, confirm your employer will support renewals and understands that each requires updated documentation from them, not just from you.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with TN history
Search Migrate Mate to identify Facilities Engineer roles at companies that have sponsored TN or H-1B visas before. Employers already familiar with the process move faster and are less likely to withdraw offers over paperwork concerns.
Prepare for Mexican nationals to use consular processing
Mexican citizens can't self-petition at the border like Canadians. You'll apply through a U.S. consulate, which means scheduling ahead and submitting your support letter and credentials in advance. Build at least four to six weeks into your timeline before a target start date.
Facilities Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, if the role requires and you hold a degree in engineering. CBP classifies Facilities Engineers under the engineer category, but the job duties in your offer letter must reflect engineering work, such as systems design, infrastructure evaluation, or project engineering oversight, rather than purely operational or administrative facility management.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Facilities Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start as soon as your employer is ready. H-1B requires registration in April, selection by random draw, and a wait until October 1 at the earliest. For Facilities Engineers with a qualifying engineering degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, duties in engineering terms, your qualifications, the employment period, and your compensation. CBP or the consulate uses this letter to verify the role meets TN engineer category criteria. Errors or vague language are the most common reason for delays.
Where can I find Facilities Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can search by job title and filter for employers familiar with the TN process, which reduces the back-and-forth that often slows down offers at companies encountering the visa category for the first time.
Can Mexican nationals apply for TN status the same way Canadians do?
No. Canadian citizens can present their documents at a U.S. port of entry and receive TN status on the spot. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before traveling. The required documents are similar, but consular processing adds scheduling time, so plan your timeline accordingly.
